I was approached by an old boss who is on the board of directors for a soon-to-be 7-12 charter school. They've asked me to come on as the Principal and have said that I would have a say in all things related to the school. The school will be in the heart of Boston and will a half hour away. I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Do what is best for you an your family! Think about the added drive time (if there is), added money (if so), and added responsibility!

Being a principal is a great responsibility but also excellent experience.

Definitely ask if this charter school is going to be around awhile or is a few year experience....

My family is in the right state for this right now, all are in HS as of next year. The money would be great. I found out it's a private charter school, so I could retire from my current job and receive the principal salary on top of 80% of my AP salary.

If your finances allow for it, and you're interested, go for it! I would be concerned about the school shutting down after a couple years, but if retirement is an option, then maybe it's time to take the risk. Good luck!

Before you do anything, can you take a tour of the school and possibly spend the day with the faculty and staff? Make sure it's a good emotional fit for you.

Do it! From what your original posts says you would have full control over the starting of the new school, right? It sounds like an amazing experience. I would go for it!!

    *smacks forehead*
NOW I see that the school is still being formed. That's a great position! Hopefully all their ducks are in a row to last a good long time. My suggestion still stands but is amended to see if you could meet informally with the team that is forming the school. Could you stand long meetings over cold pizza with them?

Brendan~I think you would make a GREAT principal. My only concern would be the staying power of this charter school. Could you realistically be able to survive off retirement if the school were to shut down in a few years?

I think that you would be a wonderful administrator--your priority is always the students and the quality of the education they are receiving.

I think I'm going to take it. I'd love to be the Principal of a School where the kid's matter most. Alice's school is the perfect example of this!

Well, I'll finish my year out at my current school and then start working at my new school next year. It will be a 6-12 school with about 100 students per class. Interviews for positions begin in a few months. I will still get to teach, though, as with such a small school we need all the teachers we can get. It's overwhelming come to think of it though, I'll take it one step at a time though. My first task is to figure out how many teachers we need and what courses we can afford to offer.

That's awesome! Congratulations. I helped start a school a long time ago. It was a lot of work, but it was also very rewarding. You'll do a fantastic job.

Before you hire half of A to Z, I'm guessing that there's some sort of formal process involved, right? That you don't have carte blanche to hire anyone and everyone you want?

Is the school opening on the site of an existing school? If so, do those teachers have to apply to your school?

Yes, there is a formal process, but we are doing out best to recruit teachers instead of having an open applicant pool. My superiors would not like to have any brand-new teachers. I will offer a few jobs to those in my school who I think would thrive.

We are still debating on logistics, I heard 100 students per grade, but that would limit our available funding so we are looking to go to 200 or more students per grade. The school is geared towards, highly motivated inner city kids, who are gifted and talented and/or honors materials. We will, in order to receive public funding, have to accommodate to IEP's. I'm sure I'll be posting frequently asking for advice on how I should proceed.

Congrats on taking this step! I'm sure it will be exciting and challenging for everybody. I would be the first in line for a math job if I was anywhere near you. I love inner city kids!

I'm sure I'll be picking your brain, I haven't taught in the inner city for close to 20 years. I am actually shocked that I received the job offer as I am not a Boston Public Schools Assistant Principal.
