I have a job fair tomorrow. I have 6 guranteed interviews with 6 districts. I'm researching each district to say specific things. However, I'm haivng some trouble coming up with reasons. Does anyone have generic reasons they give?

For example, for a couple districts I'm going to comment on the number of 4-star schools they have. But others don't have any 4 star schools.

Any suggests would be appreciated! :)

Scan through the district news to see if there's something nifty that's just happened that you can comment on?

How about something to the effect of supportive administrations, good teachers to work with or something like that...IF you can come up with a valid reason why you would know that.

For the districts that are around 5,000 I'm going to say that I like the smaller district atmosphere.

I wish they listed the programs they use on their websites!

If you could find their philosophies that would be good and then you could match it to your own. I think every school is into providing a safe, positive environment for learning.

jw has some good thoughts. Things like location are generic...you could say things like nice towns, nice geography, etc.

How about resources? Do you know what resources are available to teachers in the districts? Something like I think it would be exciting to work with xyz technology, blah blah blah.

Look up the district report cards. Check out diversity, strengths/weakness in math/reading, average class size per grade level. Pick out those things to discuss.

cMcD, I have a job fair on Saturday but its only for one district, but I'm so excited to get in there and show them my stuff. Its not a district I really want to work at, but hopefully will be good practice for when I get my interview with my DD.

Also see if they have posted their stats, sort of like a census. This would have indicators about # of yrs employees have worked for the district, employee satisfaction, confidence in a district, attitude, program satisfaction, etc.

I think you said you may interview with FCSC, and their BIG thing they are stressing and implimenting right now is the 5/6 and 7/8 schools working in teams. About 90 students per team for 5/6 and 120 for 7/8. They have redone the buildings to reflect this.

specific positives mentioned at recent meeting:
    -student teacher relationship is stregthened
-students classes and lockers are all w/i 1 area so students aren't trapsing all over the school
    -small school atmosphere
-ability to go on field trips w/their team
-teachers working together on projects and lessons for their team
-pinpointing a stuggling student is faster and more acurate

gosh, I know there's more, but I'm having a mental block!!! When it comes to me I'll post again!

pm me if you're meeting w/any johnson county school districts.

    Hey guys!

It went well today. I had 7 interviews. I had great interviews with two of my top districts. They felt more like conversations than interviews.

In the interview with one of my DD's the principal said, "Now I don't know if you'd be interested but I do have a maternity next year. It's for a semester, probably a year. How do you feel about that?" I told him that the semester was a stretch, but I would consider a year long maternity leave position.

I did have one bad interview. The HR lady from he!!. I first met her last year in an interview for a 6th grade MS position. In this particular interview the principal lied to me and they gave me 16 hours to prepare and present a lesson on science standard 6.3.1. In this interview the HR lady was asking me questions trying to trip me up. I didn't get the job, which was ok. I signed up to interview with this district again today. When I was walking up to the table I saw her and thought, "Oh please, don't let it be with her." It was, of course. She said, "You look familiar." I told her how she knew me (from last year). Then she started asking me the prepared questions they had. I told her that I got a position teaching 4th grade. She said, "Oh, is it a maternity?" Ummm, LOW BLOW lady! (No offense to the long-term subbing people out there.) But she assumed I didn't get a full-time, contracted position!!! Moving on... she then asked if my principal knew I was there interviewing. I said, "No, I haven't told her yet." She then said, "Well, it's a professional common courtesy to tell your principal. I'm not saying that I'm going to but I could be calling your principal, much like many interviewers in here today, and asking her about your qualifications. Telling her would make it a less awkward situation for me." By this point in the interview I was about to slap her. :D She rushed through her question for me in 5 minutes then asked if I had any questions. I asked 5. I was done with this interview in 10 minutes. I felt bad leaving with 10 minutes left but I couldn't take her any longer.

My other interviews went the full 20 minutes. A couple went over the 20 minutes. Many interviewers were impressed with my first year. Most the people interviewing are graduating this May. One principal actually said, "Wow, you know you're one up on 99% of the candidates here."

All in all I would say that it was a good day! :)

cMcD, sounds like it went well, save that one, but who would want to work for a district who put that lady in that position! Hopefully you will hear something from the other 6 districts soon! Good luck!

How does this sound as a thank you letter for my DD?

I would like to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to interview with you at the XYZ Interview Day. I enjoyed talking with you.

I appreciate you taking the time to learn about my qualifications and interest in XYZ Community School Corporation. I am well qualified for any 3-6 grade teaching position because of the experience I gained in my first year of teaching fourth grade at ABC Elementary along with my student teaching experiences in Indiana and Ireland. I am very excited about the opportunity to work with the faculty and staff in your corporation. I enjoyed talking with you about my experience student teaching in Ireland and the wealth of knowledge I gained during my first year of teaching.

I look forward to hearing from you or a representative from XYZ Community School Corporation. Please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information.
