I'm not exactly sure where to post this so I'll try here... I recently took a job as a safe school aide (as in, today is my second day). Today I also got a call from a middle school in the same district looking for a social studies teacher... I plan to interview after school one day, but if I am offered a job would it be bad form to take it and leave the para job I'm in now? Would the principal understand? (I'm also currently thinking of the workload of teaching and after a few months of none of it it seems daunting, but that's besides the point).

I think any principal would understand leaving a para job for a teacher job. Best of luck!

Same! They might not be THRILLED about losing an aide but I think most administrators understand that a lot of aides/paras are looking to move into a teaching job. Go for it!

There's always been a high turnover of aides in any district I've worked in so don't worry about it. Best of luck!

Take the job if you get it! It's a step up, not a "better offer" (ok it is, but you get the idea!) They'll understand. I myself lost a classroom para once due to finding a full-time teaching position, and I was more happy than upset (because she was good to her student...but her replacement was just fine too!)

So new dilemma.... I have to ask my principal for a little extra time for lunch tomorrow to go to the interview, because the principal at the middle school is determined to meet with me. (Asking her was suggested by the other principals assistant/secretary.)

That's way out of my comfort zone.

Since it's the same district, your best bet is to be upfront with your P about why you need the time. P's tend to talk together, and you'd rather this opportunity come from you than the other P.

I got the job! I told my principal about the interview this morning and she was totally supportive! When she found out I got the job she was ecstatic! Starting Monday I will shadow the other teacher whose overflow will make up my classes for a day or so then put together my classroom. As of the 22nd I will be a 6th grade social studies teacher! Starting 5 weeks in is a little intimidating, but it should be a good year!
