I am going to be teaching 5th grade readers' and writers' workshop this year!! I got a call today from the executive director of the charter school and he told me to be prepared to start professional development on Monday and that we'll set up a meeting time next week so I can sign a contract!

I've been in limbo with this whole situation for about two weeks now. I was pretty sure that I had the job because I was asked to write a letter of intent for the DOE waiver I need, but the longer I went without being asked to sign a contract, the more nervous I got that the job wasn't really mine. I guess that feeling is only natural after 2 1/2 years of job searching, though.

I'm just really excited and wanted to share!

    Thanks, everyone!
I really think it is going to be a great opportunity. I'm going to be learning more about readers' and writers' workshop and also will be working towards receiving my license to teach 5th-8th grade English which will both be things that will make me a more marketable teacher should I decide to look for a job elsewhere. Also, the pay is comparable to the public schools in the area, I'll have insurance, retirement, and all those benefits that I didn't have in the private school last year.

YAY Beth!!! I am so happy for you, that is fantastic!!
Can I ask you what the waiver is? "because I was asked to write a letter of intent for the DOE waiver I need"

    Just curious!!

    No problem! ;)

I'm licensed in elementary which is grades 1-6, but since this 5th grade is in the middle school, I'm not highly qualified to teach it. The principal needs to get a waiver from the department of ed. for this year, but they only issue waivers for one year so I need the HQ status by the end of the school year. The letter of intent just basically states that I understand that I need to take an English course and pass the English subject matter test to be licensed in English 5-8 by the end of the school year in order to have my contract renewed.

Gotcha! You only have to take one more English course and take the test? That's great - you can do that with no problem.

Congratulations again, I've been following your path for a while now and am so happy that you have found a position!!

    Thanks!! :hugs:

Getting the license shouldn't be a problem at all. I've already found the course I want to take and I'm going to try for September, but if not, I'll take it in January. It's "Literature for Young Adults" which qualifies as a course for the license (it's required for secondary ed/English majors at the college) and it's also graduate level so it'll count as an elective towards my M.Ed.

Yes, assuming I get the English 5-8 license by May 30th. If not, my contract won't be renewed.
