I have mostly boys this year and most of them are star wars maniacs. So I thought I would do a space theme this year. I haven't done one in the past. I looked online and didn't fine too many good ideas.

Anyone have any ideas to share? I have a bunch of toilet paper tubes, do I thought they could make little constellation viewers, we could discuss what gravity is and pretend we are walking on the moon. I could put together a star wars alphabet to practice letters/sounds. We could pretend to be planets rotating/revolving.

Any ideas out there? I sure would appreciate it.

Buy or get donated lots and lots of tin foil!

I did a space theme a long time ago with my preschool class (it was a Reggioesque program) and read lots of space books and made a HUGE space shuttle from a refrigerator box. My class got very into it and we would reference the books while making our space shuttle and make similar creations in the boxes. We talked about numbers and made gauges and levers (We talked about machines and I introduced simple machines) and I think we used 12 boxes of foil but it was awesome. I also used this song but with Pluto being not a planet now....

    The sun's a hot star.
    Mercury is hot too.
    Venus is the brightest planet
Earth's home to me and you.
    Mars is the red one,
    Jupiter's most wide.
    Saturn has those icey rings,
And Uranus spins on it's side.
    Neptune is really windy,
    And Pluto's really small!
Well you wanted to name the planets,
And Now we named them all!

I think it was from Blue's Clues.

I also had them do a shape picture of their space shuttle with foam shapes on a black piece of construction paper and we made stars using glue dots and glitter then each child dictated to me where they would go in a spaceship, what they would bring, and who they would want to go with them - I matted their words under their picture for a really cool display (and the parents LOVED this).

Not sure how your program is with videos but we can watch one a month if it has educational value their is a Blue's Clues Space and Zulu Patrol is an awesome science show that teaches about space.

Finally check out Mr. Ray for Kalien the Alien my class loves this alien every year and he is the friendship alien.

    Hope some of this helps:)
