I need to put together a 30 minute model lesson for a small 6th grade class (I think its only 3 children), who have learning disabilities. The topic should be in reading comprehension. I do not have experience in middle school (I am in early childhood) and i have NO idea what to do the lesson on. Are there any fun poems, short stories I can do? Is there a simple concept (foreshadow, inference...)that I can discuss based on some sort of writing? Any help would be appreciated!

If it's only 30 minutes, I would find a nice poem to read or short story. Think of any that you enjoyed as a child.

Are there websites that have age appropriate short stories that I can sort through?

I always liked Shel Silverstein or Jack Prelutsky poems.

For reading comprehension, you could do a lesson on identifying the problem and solution. Many of Silverstein's poems have a problem/solution.

I would start with a story or poem that they should already know, and identify the problem/solution of that first. Then I would move on to the new selection.

Do you know the abilities of the children?
