I am attempting to create open ended maths questions for grade 5's using a restaurant menu. The menu is from a canteen, where the minimum price is $2.5 and max is $8. The question is:

You and your family are planning on going to the Waterfront Kitchen for lunch. Create a menu planner for you and each family member that:
    1. Does not exceed $30
    2. Each family member orders at least 1 item
    3. Uses as much of your budget as possible, so your change (if there is any) is lower than the cheapest item.

Is the third requirement too hard for this age level? Could this be worded better?

*This question is for an assignment I am in my last year of study

I do something similar in grade 3. I think it's fine for grade 5.

    I do:
Order an appetizer, main meal and dessert for each family member. How much was each persons portion of the bill? How much did the family spend in all? Figure out the change.

My 5th grade daughter would be able to handle it.

My 5th graders do this every year. I would reword it so they understand the $30 limit is for everybody and not individually. I might also stipulate how many people. That budget could be hard if there are 5 or 6 in a family.

Make sure they budget for tax and tip (good real-life use of percentages.)

You could also have them to find the average price of the appetizers, avg price of the main meals, and avg price of the desserts.

I love the tax and tip idea!

The tax and tip idea is good in US not sure about Australia...According to tripadvisor:

Most goods in Australia are subject to a 10% GST (goods & services tax). This includes things bought in shops as well as dining out. The only exemptions are fresh food such as milk, bread etc. All prices listed include tax (occasionally with the exception of*plane tickets), so you should never have to pay more than the advertised price?
