    Hello,

I have thought for some time that if I could create my own job I would love to work for a school district developing and implementing environmental education programs for all the elementary schools and/or junior high/high schools. I had never heard of such a position except at a charter school that uses a place based curriculum.

However, today I was talking to someone today who I have worked with on my masters program. He said that some school districts here in Utah are beginning to look at doing just that, creating a position for an environmental education specialist.

I am hoping that with the push for each state to write an Environmental Literacy Plan that hiring a specialist to help implement that plan will become a reality. Have any of you heard of such a thing in your state/district?

    Thanks so much!

We have environmental education specialists but they work for the nature preserves or other local places, not the school district. Not sure if our districts are looking to hire this position.

We have a couple of teachers in my school district who work at outdoor education centres and run programs there. The positions are, however, very few and far between in my very large district (200 schools and almost 120 000 students).

Thanks for replying. I do know of nature centers that work with school districts to provide educational programs. Do you think charter schools or private schools have these types of positions?

I would also love teaching in my own classroom, but if I could have my dream job, I would be a science or environmental education specialist.

I know of a couple, but most are in the middle school or high school level and at schools where they have started outdoor clssroom programs. LSU actually used to offer a Master's Degree in environmental education. I haven't looked lately, because I'm too far away to even consider it. I do volunteer work with Wildlife and Fisheries, and I've always said the only thing I can think of that would make me leave the classroom would be a full-time job with them or one of the agencies we work with. (Doing environmental education, workshops with teachers, etc all the time.) Best of luck to you!!!
