I am 49 and don't want to spend time getting k-12 cert. if I can avoid it. I am a p/t aide with a Master's degree in English (from a long time ago from Rutgers Univ) who took the scenic route to life. I want to look at post-bacc type programs that will allow me to teach ESL to adults. I totally missed the TCNJ cohort programs and I am not sure if can commute to the their campus for the regular ESL initial certification program. Will an online TESOL certificate and a Master's degree carry weight in community colleges? Any thoughts? Thank you so much, thesub
My understanding is that community colleges (at least in CA) don't require K-12 certification but rather an MA in your subject area. I believe for ESL position, a Masters in Teaching ESL would be preferable. However, I would try contacting some local departments to see what they are looking for. The application websites should also be pretty clear as to the requirements, as well.
