Is it "wrong" in any way to do math in the mornings before language arts?

Most teachers seem to devote the morning to language arts block. I'm doing math mornings though. Note, I have a TA from 8:30-9:30. Most teachers are utilizing their TA during the LA block it seems, but I'm doing math small groups (I get half, my TA gets the other half of the class) for more individualized math attention. Also, on Mondays my class has a special math lab where a math specialist comes in for that first hour block to do math with my children while I prep.

I do the LA block right after recess, on my own.

So, I'm kind of doing the opposite of what most teachers do (i.e. LA in the morning, math after recess). Is my way flawed in any way? Is there a research finding that LA goes best first thing in the morning with math after, for 1st graders?

    Basically, my reasoning:

    1. I like the math small groups. My TA allows me that opportunity. I pair faster workers with me and so I can focus them on enrichment after they're done with the activity everyone else does, while my TA gets the students who need more time finishing the work

    and

    2. it keeps it consistent for the kids since they have a special math lab on Monday mornings that whole first hour block

That is why I do math mornings, but this is my first year doing first grade, so if I'm off in any way, please let me know.

No! That Asian Women ad is on again.
Get this mess off the screen!

    Tek,
If it's on your schedule that way, then I see nothing wrong with it.
As long as it's okay with the administration, the parents are aware of it, and it's posted on your schedule, then it is fine.

In the last district I worked at, there were a group of teachers at another school site who declared that they were going to do math first thing in the morning. That there were studies that showed tests scores increased when math was done at that time. Other research showed that it made no differece whether you did it first thing in the morning or later on. Frankly, I think whatever works best for you. So far, I haven't heard/read about any research that said that doing math first was harmful.

When I was homeschooling, I did math first thing with my boys (not MY boys, it was for a family I was working for). I liked doing math first.

My math time always depended on when I had our advanced pull out program. There were years when we had it at the end of the day and some when we had it first thing. I felt like the students were more alert in the mornings and were more successful than in the afternoons. The kids were so tired by the end of the day!

But it sounds like you're going to do LA right after math and an hour shouldn't make that much of a difference. I think it'll be fine.

As long as it isn't school policy that everyone teach math at the same time of day, this should be fine.

It's really about what works for you and your students! Some years you'll find that the students need math in the morning and some years they will need LA, other years it really won't matter.

I always taught math first thing in the morning, for several reasons:

    1) I like math. It's a subject that, most of the time, I can just jump into without a whole lot of preparation, so if I was running late for some reason, I could just start. Language arts is a struggle for me, so I couldn't necessarily do that.

    2) I don't like LA. Therefore, not a way I wanted to start my day.

    3) Nearly every other grade started with LA, so all of the pull out times, and para time, would be taken by the time they got around to scheduling my sixth graders. So I waited.

It's really up to you-as long as your school doesn't have a policy.

If I could I would teach math first thing. But our pull outs for my grade level begin in the morning so I have to do ELA first. Do what works best for you and your students.

I am going to do math from 9-10 and then my ELA. Last year I did math from 2-2:40 and LOVED having it there! But this year my kids have gym and music in that slot.

We are given a block schedule that is district wide. My math time this year is in the morning. I am glad! My language arts block is split into two 45 minute blocks: before lunch and end of day.

My grade 5/6 students will have math and science during the first third of the day and English/Language during the last third.

I could have written that! I always start with math! Plus it gives me time to pull kids who struggled later in the day.

I always did my math block in the morning since that is what my old school wanted. I enjoyed having it first thing in the morning because I was able to get it done right away and they were focused. At my new school, I do my math lessons after our language arts. I have found it is harder to get my kinders to focus for math lessons after recess and before lunch. I've actually been told that it is best to do math at the end of the day, but my kids are just so done by that time that I am not sure I could swing it. I might switch my lessons around and see if I am able to get them to focus better having it later.

I do math at the end of the day and I completely hate it! I've actually never heard anyone say it's a good idea...that's interesting. Our schedule is mandated by the district so I don't have a choice. I find it hard because I feel like math has more direct instruction than any other subject I do, and the end of the day is hard for the kids to be sitting/listening that much. I always try to do a hands on activity too, but it's still a lot to take in. My class as a whole is a LOT weaker in math than other subjects too, so I'd like to do it the morning when they're "freshest" if I had a choice.

I did math at the end of the day and I loved it! I found we weren't rushed and had lots of time in the afternoon for centers and to explore.

We are required to do ELA in the morning. But if it works for you and your admin doesn't care, then go for it! :)

Thanks everyone! It's good to know math going 1st in the morning, as long as it benefits my kids and doesn't go against school policy, is perfectly A-OK (if not recommended in some cases!)

I like math mornings. I start with a brief morning meeting on the carpet and then transition them into their seats for directed instruction and then that day's math lesson.

Today I'll be doing Leaping Lambs -- covering the partners of 4 (1+3, 2+2, 3+1). The kids will pretend to be little lambs and jump over a fence (i.e. ruler, lol). Gives them a visual and gets them moving. Should be fun for all!
