Someone told me that the reason why I want to celebrate Valentine's Day on Wednesday instead of Thursday doesn't make sense. I chose to celebrate it on Wed. because after lunch, we about about 40 minutes before dismissal (wed. is our early out day). SO, that is the day we do PAT. I have a whole 40 minutes open dedicated to such things as art, parties, games, etc. So, that's one reason why I'm doing it on that day. Another reason is because we're so far behind, I really can't afford to skip math or Social studies. Last, 40 minutes is not enough time to teach our math or S.S program, so it's not like I could switch the two things around. Okay, there are my reasons for doing Valentine's on Wed. Are these reasons stupid?
Well, even after explaining them to this person, they still said it didnt' make sense. "why not celebrate Valentine's Day in October if it doesn't matter?" UGH! I'm so tired of dumb people (especially after the week I'm having AND IT'S ONLY TUESDAY!)
Don't listen to those people. There are tons of people who celebrate Thanksgiving on SATURDAY because that's what works for their whole family. Same thing applies to any celebration. Tell her that you are celebrating Christmas in July next year, too and just leave it at that.
What's funny is I think it is okay for families to celebrate holidays any day they want but in school it is a given that it is on the day it is supposed to. Oops. I disagree. Don't point cupid's arrow on me. BUT.... I love dedicated teachers that are very committed to the curriculum instead of just moving it all around all over the place on a whim (one day is not a whim...I'm just thinking of some around here).
I suppose teachers in public schools have to follow the "norm" for the most part. I don't work for the public school system so we have the freedom to decide what works best for us and all the families involved.
We are celebrating on Friday....Doesn't bother me! Never have been a big believer in Valentine's Day! Maybe that's because it never gets remembered!
Yes, I wouldn't worry about it--I'm at a public preschool, and some people are doing Wed, Thurs, or Fri--I even saw a couple parties Mon or Tues instead. My class is doing Friday.
I think your reasons make perfect sense. They'll have the party and then get out of school early and you can have all of Thursday for the curriculum you need to cover. You have a perfect block of time on Wednesday and it won't throw the entire day off. We're doing ours on Thursday and I'm not anticipating getting much teaching done even with our party being in the morning.
I am having our party on Friday, and when I told the other teachers, they all looked at me like I was just wanting to rock the boat. To me, Friday is more party day, it's early out, and we have stuff to do on Thursday. I would say, tough luck, Chuck (whoever said that to you). When you get paid to make the decisions, be my guest!
I am not even having a party this year. I made the kids goodie bags & will bring juice boxes. My student teacher will bring cupcakes. I told them that we will make valentine bags on Thursday morning in reading centers, and they can pass out valentines in the afternoon. That is it. We are having a snow day today, and a big wig in our district is coming to visit that afternoon also (who would plan that?????) The kids moaned & groaned, but we just don't have time.
Friday makes a lot of sense too. We have an assembly on Friday right in the middle of the afternoon, otherwise I would have considered that day too.
THe meeting with the D.O. is this Friday. I'm on pins and needles as to what they are going to tell me.
I think that this is funny because I have four moms who wanted me to do it Wednesday. I am doing it today with the rest of the school. I told them no -- it is in the history books on the 14th, so that when we will do it. That did not make me the popular teacher. Bright side--only two parents coming to the party not 14.
Usually, when the holiday falls on a day we are in school, we have our party that day, but all the other holidays (Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving) we have our party or 'event' the day BEFORE the last day. It makes the last day much calmer and far less hectic than cramming everything in.
I'll admit when I first read the title I though "why isn't she waiting." But reading your post it makes sense for you & your class!!! Gotta do what's best for your class!!!
