I just found out yesterday that I will be a first grade teacher next year!! :D

I am graduating in May, so this will be my first year teaching. I will be the only first grade teacher at my school, so I will definitely be using this board as a resource! Any advice for a newbie teacher?

As someone who HATED first graders in August and now "loves" them...just remember, they come to you as babies and leave as big kids!

Many congrats! This is my first year as a teacher and in first grade. Remember that even though every day may be a struggle, it gets easier and better as the year goes on. Even when it doesn't, when the day is over you get to think and replan. Call your mom if you need a hug. ;-)

Also make sure that you're well prepared to teach guided reading lessons. I feel like that's about 80% of my effort. Teaching these kids to read is a giant part of my job.

If you aren't familiar with "Daily Five", "Cafe",(from "the sisters") and "Work Stations"(Debbie Diller)
find these books and become familiar with the routines. They have made my reading block so much more managable, and the children are engaged in authentic activities.
Also, when you map out your daily schedule, plan the Reading/Language Arts and Math blocks first, and try to do them in the morning, if at all possible. First grades tend to get really tired in the afternoon, especially during the first few months, so you want them to work on these core subjects when they are at their best.

I started using daily 5 this year too and love it! I was wondering; what is the difference b/w that and cafe?

Congrats welcome to a to z and 1st grade. I LOVE LOVE LOVE 1st grade. Never take anything personal, seek colleagues for advice, questions etc. Face each day as a new experience. Everything is trial and error.

You will love it!! This is my first year teaching, and I was blessed to be placed in 1st grade. It takes a special person to teach 1st grade I have learned, the pressure to get these babies reading is something else. But it is SO gratifying when they finally "get" it!! I actually loved them at the beginning of the year.. they are so little and sweet and naive. You will be their teacher, personal jungle gym, tear wiper, hug factory, and "best friend" as all of the little girls in my class call me. Feel very lucky to teach such an awesome age!

I'm moving to 1st next year, and this thread is making me really excited!! It's great to hear such enthusiasm from 1st grade teachers!

What is the one supply you can't live without in your classroom?
