I noticed on some of the other grade level forums they were doing introductions, and I thought that might be helpful.

My name is Amanda, and this will be my first year in third grade. I live in a small farm town in southern IN, but I am originally from Wisconsin. I have taught fifth grade for two years. My favorite subject is History, but I have found that I love teaching science and writing. I have a Spanish certificate, too, but currently don't have an opportunity to use it. I teach at a small Lutheran school, so I will also be teaching 1-4 grade music (but this year I don't have to teach art or computers-yay!). This year I also have the great privilege of directing the K-4 spring musical, which should be a grand adventure.

Outside of school, I love to read, scrapbook, and watch sports. My favorite stress release is my piano, and I also play the organ at church once or twice a month.

    Okay, who's next?

My name is Stephanie, and I teach 3rd grade in a rural school in north-central Indiana. I've taught 2nd grade and a 2/3 multi age class in the past. This will be my fifth year in teaching overall.

In my spare time, I enjoying chasing my 16 month old son, watching sports, and reading.

My name is Kelly. I taught 3rd last year. Before that I taught 2nd and Kinder. As of now I'll be doing a 3/4 combo in the fall, but nothing's been confirmed.

I enjoy scrapbooking as well. I also like to read (especially during the summer) as well as spending time on ABC while watching TV. Teaching has made me a habitual double-tasker! :)

I'm Candy, I have taught 5th for the last two years, I am going to miss 5th. I am excited about 3rd grade though...
I am looking forward to "trying" some new things, more read alouds-picture books, etc.
I teach in "Atlanta Metro", we are approx 25 miles from ATL, a rural/suburban area. Third graders must pass the CRCT in reading only compare to 5th graders who must pass Reading and Math for promotion...though of course the expectation is for students to pass and exceed in all areas.
Family wise, I have 3 sons at home and DH...I am also enrolled in school, getting my Ed Specialist Degree-in Elm Ed. and considering a Dr. of Ed program.

MS Candy, I'm feeling exactly the same way! I am really going to miss teaching 5th grade history, but I get more excited about 3rd grade every day. :)

I'm Grace (duh :)). This will also be my first year in third grade. I have taught special ed and second grade. I'm quite nervous about the transition to third! I loved my position in second, but was asked to go to third to teach a TAKS grade. I hope I live up to the expectations!

Other than work, I love cooking, movies, and the lake (or really anything where I'm in the water). I'm also one semester away from finishing up a masters degree in administration, so maybe in the next year or two I will be moving out of teaching. Who knows!

Hi :) I'm Melissa and I have been in Georgia since '03. During that time I have taught Kindergarten (1), 2nd grade (3) and this will be my 3rd year in 3rd grade. I have enjoyed the transition from Western Kentucky (very rural area) to Georgia (approximately 35 miles se of ATL) I came from an area with 3 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school to one with 14 elementary, 5 middle, and 3 high schools.
Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my bf and working on things around our townhouse. We have one dog (sheltie), 4 cats and a guinea pig.

My name is Katie and I just got a 3rd grade teaching position yesterday! This will be my first year teaching though I graduated 1 year ago. I've student taught in 1st and 2nd grade. The 2nd grade was in the spring so I'm hoping this will aide in my transition to 3rd grade.

The school I'll be at is quite small with 1 teacher for each grade level with the exception of 2 for 4th or 5th grade. I'm excited not to have that "competition" with another teacher or class that is so often an undertone (what page are you on?, my kids are already doing..., etc.) but as much as I'm excited to have help from the other teachers in the building, I know I'll be relying on the teachers on this board to provide some guidance as well.

Outside of teaching I enjoy spending time with my family, antiquing, mind-numbing tv watching and being outdoors. I'll be relocating from a larger city to a very small town but I'm excited to slow down life a bit! We'll see if I'm saying that in a few months when I can't find a decent steak dinner ;)

I can't wait to get to know all of you!

Hi Everyone! Today I just got hired for my first year of teaching in rural Montana in third grade. I am very eager to get things started but a tad overwhelmed by all of the prep work I have ahead of me since school starts in a month! Wow!

I graduated in the fall from a school in Washington state and am excited to relocate to a smaller town. There are only about 3000 people where I am moving so that will be a change of pace but I am excited for the challenge. Like newbie23 I will be THE third grade teacher at my small school so I too am excited to not have that competition between teachers but a little worried that the education relies solely on me! :)

Outside of education I enjoy reading, photography, hiking, traveling, and I am starting to get into running which is a new adventure for me. I also love cooking and watching movies!

I look forward to getting to know you all over the year and look forward to making some new friends here! Good luck with all of your classroom prep!

It is so nice to see so many people that are new to third grade on here! Makes me feel a lot better about my new job being that I don't have any other third grade teachers in my school to turn to! Can't wait for the year to start! :)

Hi everyone! I have been "lurking" all summer and have already picked up some great ideas. It is time to come out of hiding though, and join the conversation. I have been teaching for 13 years, with the last 7 in 3rd grade. I have dual licensure in general and special education, and have taught 4th and 5th special ed as well as general ed 3rd grade.

In my spare time I love anything outdoors. I live in the mountains outside of Albuquerque, NM and am within easy walking distance of the National Forest, where I take my 2 mutts for long walks every day I can. I am also an avid reader and an adventuresome cook. I have 2 kids of my own, one in high school and one who is trying out his independence in Chicago.

Thanks for all of the helpful hints and ideas!

Hi! I'm Christina. This will be my 7th year teaching. I taught 3rd for three years and then moved to 1st grade (3 years) and now I'm going back to 3rd. I look forward to going back because I've had the chance to see where the kids start out and I think this will help me tremendously with the children who struggle. Talk about a learning experience! I'm also excited because some of my babies from my 1st grade class 2 years ago will be in my class again. I teach in a rural town in western North Carolina. No husband or kids yet, but I do have a boyfriend, 2 dogs, and a cat. I just finished working on my National Boards (I find out in November whether or not I achieved) and have applied to grad school. I hope to get my masters in Library Science.

I'm Sheryl~~ and am getting ready for my fifth year of teaching Kindergarten. It's been a year and a half since I've been on this site...I missed it! I changed careers in my late 40s and am proof that it's never too late to become who you were meant to be!!

Looking forward to the bright ideas and creative strategies to be found on AtoZ!! ;)

HI! My name is Angela and this will be my 3rd year teaching 3rd. Before that, I taught mostly 5-8, with a year in a 2/3 classroom. I "became" a 3rd grade teacher when I moved to my new school only 4 miles from where I live. What a blessing it has turned out to be. I figured I would teach 3rd for a year or so, and then get to move back to the middle/jr.high students-which I really enjoy. Now, after doing this for 2 years, I have my routine down, and it isn't as bad as I thought. Plus, my 4year old daughter will be in Pre-K at my school and her playground is right below my classroom, AND I will see her on the way to lunch. (Now, if I just got along with the other teachers on the floor life would be peachy) (Don't know why, but there has always been some tension among us-a story for another time). Anyway, in my spare time, I love to read, camp, and do stamping and scrapbooking-though I never find the time for that-. I have received a plethora of great ideas here and know they will continue. Have a great year everyone! :thumb:

In my spare time I enjoy scrapbooking, frisbee and gardening.

Hi! I'm Kathy. I'm going back to teaching 3rd this year after two years in second. I'm excited to be looping with my kids. I'm just a little worried about our state testing this year.
When I'm not teaching I hang out with my friends a lot, love photography and spending time with my dog, Jack.
I look forward to getting some new ideas to start up the school year again...which by the way is August 24th.

Hi everyone! I am so excited to "meet" all of you as I read about each one! I have been teaching in one capacity or another for 14 years (mostly Secondary subbing and teaching music), however I decided to get my elementary endorsement last year. I taught 4th grade last year as a long term sub from Nov. to June. I was just hired last week as a third grade teacher! I LOVE 3rd grade, but I am so nervous. Right now, I feel completely overwhelmed by what I need to do to get ready and how to do it on a very limited budget until my checks start coming. One thing I am sure of is that I made the right decision to go back to school and I am thrilled that I got a job teaching an amazing age group!

I've been married for 17 years and have three children. My oldest daughter starts HS this year. My younger daughter is in eighth grade, and my son is in 3rd grade at the same school where I teach! :) I love to read, shop, and enjoy the beaches of Lake Michigan. I am aobut half-way through a Master's degree in Differentiation and hope to finish it over the next couple of years, once I get my feet under me again.

Hi, everyone! I am back in 3rd grade after 6 years in 2nd and one in K, and 10 years at home!! Prior to that I was an educational consultant and before that - I taught 3rd grade! This is like "coming home" for me, I guess. I am in Indiana at a small (450 students) quasi-rural school. We have fantastic support from parents and the community, and a wonderful P.

My own family is evolving - w/ two teenagers (grades 12 and 10) in the house, things are rarely dull, quiet, or peaceful.

I look forward to the give-take of ideas and problem solving on here w/ others teaching 3rd grade. I'll come to you often as I make the transition up a level. Thanks!

Hi y'all, I'm not a teacher, I have a child starting 3rd grade this year. She struggles with school and I struggle with the school so I come here to get advise from other educators on how to handle some of the situations we encounter. Last year I hung out with the 2nd grade group, this year obviously I'll be hanging with all of you.

It's just me and my daughter hanging out here in Florida. My daughter LOVES horses, swimming and softball (her first sport). I like the beach and watching Rays baseball and sometimes Nascar. In our spare time we do what ever our moods feel like doing..

Good luck to all the new and seasoned teachers, I give all of you a lot of credit for being teachers.. You have a tremendous and often thankless job of teaching our children their most important skills. Always be attentive to their individual needs, they look to you the most for their educational direction..
