Okay, in the past couple of weeks, I have experienced two of the strangest interviews.
Last week, I went and interviewed with the state school system which runs all the technical schools in my state. It was for an English teaching Position. When I got there, there was a panel of about 8 teachers. They introduced themselves, told me I would be doing a demo lesson (which I knew) and then would be answering about 10 questions. They then handed me the list of questions.
The panel then informed me that they would be moving to the other room, closing the door and observing me through a one-way mirror. So there I was, teaching to an empty room, and then answering the list of questions that they gave me while looking into the mirror. I don’t know, but I found this unnerving and strange. I am used to at least face-to-face contact and human responses when I interview. Is this the new way of teaching?
Then the other day, I had an interview at a magnet school. I arrived 15 min. prior to my time, and proceeded to look for the entrance. The school was in an abandoned factory that had been renovated. I found the entrance with the name of the school clearly posted above the doorway. I then rang the buzzer to go in – no answer. I tried the door, but it was locked. I rang the buzzer (which was clearly marked) but again, no answer. I proceeded to walk around the building to see if there was another entrance. Couldn’t find one that was open, so went back to the first entrance. Still no one around and no one answering the buzzer. Finally, someone came out of the entrance so I asked them to hold the door. When I finally got in, I was quickly rushed into the interview room and told by the principal that “Your first test was to get into the building, and you failed it”. I didn’t know if he was joking or not, but I was shaken by this time, and just tried my best.

I don’t know – it seems like my interviews are just getting stranger and stranger. And I still did not get either job 

Wow! That is crazy! Interviewing by yourself? Talking through a mirror? Very strange. That takes the cake for strange interviews. I did interview with a Charter School recently that was in an old grocery store. I had a hard time finding the entrance also. There were three different entrances, none of them open or marked very well. I am interviewing for a non-teaching job at a Trader Joe's now. I have gone though three different interviews the last couple of weeks. I should know by the end of the week if I get the job. I still find it strange that it takes three interviews to work at a grocery store even for someone with 20 years of retail experience. But this is the state of our current job market. I really hope I get the job. I am looking for non-teaching jobs now after looking for so many years for a teaching job and having a horrible experience with my first teaching job. I have finally gotten teaching interviews this year, but am so nervous in my interviews.

When I graduated, I was surprised to be picked for what I was always told was a prestigious school. I later found it wasn't. It more of a dumping ground for the children of teachers and parents who whine. I went on the interview and was given a stuffed teddy bear and told to interact with it like it was a student. I looked at the principal for a minute with a vacant look on my face. I was hoping it was a joke. I knew laughing would get me in trouble if it were. I can't remember what I did, but all I know is that in my brain was a loop of "Don't laugh. She's crazy!". I was called about a month later and I got the job. Thankfully, I had been hired at my current school already. I don't know if I could work in a environment like that.

I've had nothing quite that weird... my weirdest one was a four-part interview process. For part 1, you interviewed with the principal and a couple teachers... this narrowed the field from 400(!?!) to 30. Then you interviewed with the superintendent and school board, 30 to 10. Then you taught a sample lesson to a classroom on a topic they chose, 10 to 3... and then you interviewed with the principal again. Not going to lie... I didn't mind the fact that they didn't call me back for round 2.

Strange...but these were somewhat non-tradional schools, wouldn't you say? Weird nonetheless....my School's hiring protocol hasn't changed in the last 8 or so years. ( we started hiring committees about 8 years ago, before that teachers weren't included in the process ).

Yep, so am I. After going into even more debt to take 2 years of college coursework to get an alternative certificate as an intervention specialist, I have had no luck getting a job after 2 years of searching. So I am now going back to what I know which is marketing and customer service.
