I had a great second interview today. At least I think it went well - I felt freely to be myself, like I was talking to a friend. It's weird talking about what *I* have to offer...kinda like having to *sell* myself and toot my own horn. I've realized that I do have a lot of different talents, skills, and abilities to offer.

I'll know before Sunday, whether or not I got the job. They have first, third, fourth and fifth grade openings. They asked me what I preferred, and I expressed interest in first and third grades. So, well see.

I feel like I would be a really good fit in this school, as my beliefs and teaching style seem to fit the schools. I hope they feel the same way. I have a really good feeling about it.

Although, they seemed concerned that I have had a lot of preschool experience, where things have been more "fun" and not like elementary school. I expressed that in student teaching, I did a lot of planning with guidance from the mentor teacher by the curriculum. The principal asked "What would you do if you didn't have any textbooks and only curriculum." I said that I would draw from the curriculum and refrenced to my student teaching experience, where I used the curriculum as a guide and pulled lessons out of it that fit the students needs, I also drew from other teachers knowledge and reliable teacher websites.

They looked through my portfolio and really seemed interested in me. Although, when the principal saw my educational philosophy, she looked over at the other teacher looking at it. It seemed like a positive look, but I couldn't really figure it out...?

I guess I'm worrying too much. But I keep wondering what she was thinking.

Anyway, sorry to write a novel. :)

Who doesn't over analyze from time to time...that's just how it is. I'm sure they loved you and they will hire you....I just know it! Good luck!

Good Luck! Hopefully you will hear sooner rather than having to wait until Sunday.

That's great. I know what you mean about being comfortable. I know I'm a freak, but I actually like interviews. If only they came with a glass of wine and munchies, it would be a cocktail party!

I'm glad to hear it went so well!

Glad to hear you feel positive about it! If you feel positive then chances are the people who interviewed you feel positive about you! Good Luck!

I agree with Aliceacc. I like interviews too! It's the thought of mtg new people and learning more about the position that excites me. It's getting there on time and the "waiting" game that get to me most. Off to get ready for another interview.

Wow, I wish that I had the speaking skills to like interviews too, but they do get MUCH easier with more experience!

That sounds very positive! The fact that you felt comfortable there says something about how the interview went. :) Let us know when you hear the good news! :)

    Thanks for the well wishes.

I got called back for a second interview on Friday! It's for a first-grade position and the first grade staff will be there. I'm really excited and a little nervous at the same time!

So, what happens on second interviews? What should I prepare for?

I think they are all different. For my second interview(s) one was over the phone and the second was with another person from the school I would be working in. If they suggested you bring anything, look up some information, etc. definitely do that. Otherwise it could be a recap of the first with a different person or people. Bring more copies of everything so if needed you can give them a fresh copy of anything they might need. Paperwork doesn't always makes it from person to person. Good Luck!

I hear a lot of people talking about doing a demo lesson on an interview. Is this pretty much a given or does it vary?

I would guess that if they wanted you to do a demo they would give you warning. I brought a very detailed, almost word for word, lesson plan to my interviews and gave the interviewer a copy.

I had the second interview today for a first grade position at 1:00 p.m. I interviewed with a school last week and they asked me to come back.

She said that they asked me to come back because my cooperating teacher from student teaching had such nice things to say about me.

It was the principal and another first grade teacher and she basically asked me a lot of questions...how do you feel about being observed/helped by the reading specialist (I said no problem - I am very open to suggestions and love working with other people), what would you do if you had a reoccuring behavior problem (I said call parents, start with a positive and end with a positive remark, explain situation, show concern, what you've done, etc), I can't remember what else.

Basically, she took the time to take me around the whole school and explained how things worked. She talked to me like I already had the job, "oh, this room would probably be your classroom." We probably talked for about 45 minutes...when we got back to the principals office, she said "Wow, you've been gone a long time!" The teacher remarked that she was chatty and I was asking lots of good questions.

Basically, they told me they're making a decision "this afternoon" and will let me know.
I'm getting anxious waiting, as it's almost 5 pm and getting close to evening time. My interview lasted from 1-2:15. :)

I also have an inside reference from one of the teachers who works there. Hopefully that helps.

Do they typically show you the whole school? I didn't even have to ask.
I just want to know! I don't like waiting.

It sounds like it went very well! :) You'll have to let us know what happens.

I have had school tours at positions I have been offered and ones I didn't get. Good luck!

I hope they called you so you don't have to wait all weekend!
The only time I have been shown around a school is after they have offered me a job. So that is good news you were shown the school.

    No news yet.

She said they would make a decision today but didn't mention when she would let people know. I figured if they were really interested, they would have called tonight. But maybe not, the principal was away all week at a conference and just got back. It's only the second year the school has been open, so they are hiring about 2-3 more teachers per grade level. I live in NoVA, so this area is booming with new housing developments and schools.

I have a couple friends that work there, and one of them emailed the principal and gave her a really good reference (I didn't even ask her to). Both interviews went well, but I felt more nervous at the one, kinda stumbled over my answer once, but great for the most part.

I guess I may hear something on Monday.

Waiting stinks! I am waiting on three calls which I am hoping to get on Monday! Of course I have an interview 5 hrs away on Monday. Not sure I want to even go. But I don't dare not to I'm afraid if I don't go I won't get anything!

I once drove 1000 miles for an interview fearing that I wasnt good enough to teach here in Texas. When I got there I found out that Texas was and is the only place for me. I actually turned down the job thy offered me. As of Monday afternoon I am a brand new teacher in the district that I graduated from 20 years ago. Something that I have wanted since 2000 when i started college. Hang in there. I know its hard. Good luck to all still searching.

Good news! I got an email saying I got the job! They sent it yesterday but I didn't get it until today. They just have to contact human resources and they will call me in a few days. I'm thrilled! :)
