I am interviewing for a 2nd grade position tomorrow. I'm really excited, but nervous. I worked in the same school last year as a LTS for 5th grade. The principal called and told me about the position before it was posted. He said that he thought that the 2nd grade class would be a better fit between teacher and students.

I have worked with almost all the students when I was a paraprofessional two years ago, when they were in kindergarten. I know a lot of the parents as well. Last year, before switching jobs, I worked with 1/5 of the 1st graders and guessing about 1/5 will be kids from that classroom, but I was also out with the 1st graders at recess and know a lot of them through there.

Any ideas or things I should prepare for in the interview. I know they use Everyday Math, which I've taught and had experience with, and the reading curriculum is new to everyone, so we are all in the same boat.

One last question, if you were/are a principal: would you hire a teacher with background of the parents/students, knows the school, and you have seen do good work or would you hire a teacher with years of experience?

Good luck tomorrow! I think that principals are looking for a good "fit" to their district. I don't think it hurts that you know the students and the parents. That might be a good thing. Some things I would be prepared to answer are classroom management system, instruction for different levels of learning, and parent involvement.

I am sorry to hear that. Did they give you any clue as to why?

That's strange. Nearly every interview I've been on when they have called they have given me a reason as to why they hired someone else. I would call them and ask.
