I want to have a back-up. What if I don't find what I want this summer? I want this 6th grade position to be there if nothing else comes my way.

Like I said, you can do it but you then have burned that bridge.

If you say yes that you will do it, they call HR at the district and tell them cMcD is going to work for us. Then you change your mind. They call the district and tell them you aren't taking the job and you are toast in that district.

I'm not trying to seem picky, trust me. It's just 6th grade is not my cup of tea. I like 3-5, preferably 4.

That's fine by me though. There are so many districts around Indy. I don't have to work in this district.

I mean I have my job fair on April 21 where I'm interviewing with the 6 districts.

Okay so you think this school in district A might offer you a job and just ask for a verbal committment and not give you a contract yet?

If that is the case, you could say yes and if something comes along in a reasonable time you could change your mind with district A but I don't think another school in district A would hire you.

Now, if you think they will ask for a verbal committment and hand you a contract, they will not expect you to hang on to that contract until July. I would think it would be wrong and risky to hang on to it for that long.

Okay, it sounds like it isn't what you want. I totally know what you are saying. You need to make the decision that is best for you. Tell them before you sign anything you want to talk with your family or that you are also considering another offer (it just hasn't come in yet) :D

Yeah. I know that. Most schools that I know of don't make you sign until school starts. I signed my contract 3 weeks into school.

really? wow...we sign contracts in May.
You can verbally say ok to 100 schools...but it doesn't mean anything until it is on paper with your signature.

I always hear of contracts being signed in September, even as late as October.

I have heard that if you get an offer to have them put it in writing. That way you can hold them to it.

That is what I have right now...an offer in writing, signed by the principal. I will get the real contract in May.
I'm just going by charter schools and private schools though. I have yet to be in a real public school.

I think most districts wait because they are still hammering out sports coaches and such. They had to re-figure my contract because I took on the volleyball asst. coach a couple weeks into the season, a month into school.

Ahh...I see. I'm an academic coach (science olympiad)...and my current school doesn't give extra for that...but the new one does! yay!
Will you be a coach at a new school too?

    Maybe?

I took the asst. coaching job because they were desperate and I couldn't say no to my principal. I also sponsor student council. The coaching paid about $1500 and student council is $220.

    Nice! Supplements make me smile...lol.

Maybe you could ask about coaching at different schools, and that might help you make a decision?

I could chat all day about this..but I need to go argue with boyfriend...haha.

I'll catch up on this thread tomorrow :)

You have to do what you feel is right...now that I think about it, I've actually done both sides...lol. I verbally committed to an offer over the phone and then wound up withdrawling once my current position was offered to me. I felt horrible calling Salem and saying "no thank you even though the board meeting is tonight!" but in the end it worked out. They, on the other hand, didn't know I was still interviewing...

So in the end, go with your gut. Just hope, like others said, it doesn't burn bridges too badly if you do...

Teachers have backed out right before the school year begins, because they get a better offer more often than you'd think. For the past 3 years I've been called to sub for the first day of school, until they find a permenant hire. Last year it took 4 weeks!!!

And I agree that you need to do what feels right for you. Listen to yourself...

oh...and I wouldn't say picky...you know what you want, and that's priceless! I wouldn't compromise this early in the game. Like you said, you have 6 districts you are interviewing with in a couple weeks. Your dream job is out there! Don't settle for just a j o b.

    Good luck!!!!!

Thanks for the advice leigh and sub&mom. I would feel horrible calling and backing out, but I need to have a guaranteed job at the end of the summer. And I need to do what's best for me. My bf is going to try to transfer his job, so that will play a factor in the whole decision as well. If he gets a job on the north side of the city I'm going to want to have a job on the north side too. With gases prices the way they are we want our commutes to be as short as possible. (This school is on the south side.)

Who knows! I may not even get the offer. I think ahead too much...

If you like the district and verbally commit, I would stay. Once you are in a district, it's easier to switch grade levels. Teachers in the district usually get first dibs on any open positions, even before they are advertised.
