Hopefully you sent her one telling her how wonderful she is and although you aren't her teacher, you consider yourself luckier because teachers are only for a year but a sister gets to be one forever.

It went fine. Nothing spectacular. I doubt I'll get the job as this district is all about hiring people with experience. I'm really hoping to get the other job since school starts soon. I did not realize how fast it was approaching. This first day of school is August 8 and orientation at the school I want is August 7. I have to attend new teacher orientation which is like next week I think. They are also using a new reading program so I would have to get trained for that as well. I'm FREAKING out. I'm seriously going to start calling all the schools if I find out I didn't get the job. AHH!

well, i didn't get the job. the personnel director said the principal was leaning towards someone else. I have never been so disappointed in my life. The personnel director did say that she needed a 4th grade teacher. The problem is that I'm early childhood so I only go up until 3rd. She asked if I would be willing to take the praxis for elementary ed. which I said yes to. she scheduled an interview for me for tomorrow but after talking about it with my husband, it's just not a good idea. I don't have the money to pay for the test and i don't even know if I would pass it. I have no idea what to do anymore. there are no positions open and school starts week after next. I need a job desperately as we have like NO money. I do mean none. My cell just got turned off today. I could go into detail as to why but i'll just say that my husband has ptsd from Iraq so that interferes with jobs. Anyway, i'm just rambling on about my problems but I wanted to let yall know I didn't get the job. If I don't see any openings by next week, I'll start looking elsewhere for a job. I just don't know what else to do.

    FG,
I'm sorry you didn't get the job. Please, please, please, go ahead and interview for the 4th grade position. Tell them "yes" you'll take the Praxis. First of all, it isn't all that hard. Second, they will give you time to do it. They usually give you the entire first year to get it done. That is plenty of time to study and you'll have money coming in from your paychecks.

Don't give up. I know you are disappointed, but don't let that disappointment keep you from landing your teaching job. Hang in there!!! Don't shut the door on this opportunity.

    Footballgal,

I am so sorry to hear the news.:(

These are hard times, I know. It may be worth the investment to take the test if you get the job, as it would mean a steady income. IMHO. However, you know what are the best choiced for your family. Hang in there, whatever decision you do make.

hmm, I don't know but I am reconsidering the interview. I had already sent an email saying I didn't want the job so I sent another one saying that I changed my mind. This lady must be sick of hearing from me!! I think my biggest fear is that I don't have any experience with fourth grade. Throughout all of my 6 college years, it's always been about prek - 3rd. I did most of my observations with 3rd and then student taught in 3rd so I feel comfortable with 3rd but not with 4th. If they would give me time to take it, that would be great. I just can't go and take it tomorrow! lol. It would be a place to start and I would be getting a paycheck. It's just so overwhelming. I never thought I would have to add on a certification to get a job.

Please go to the interview-In Fl. you have the entire school year to pass the test. How much is it anyway? Ours are $25.00.And 4th is not much different than 3rd really.

the praxis here is $140. I am waiting to hear from her to see how long they will give me to take the test. As long as they give me time to make money, lol, I would be fine with it. In september, the new school will be opening. The school that the position is at was flooded during Hurricane Rita so they had to move to portable buildings at one of the middle schools. This new school isn't too far from my house. So it would be great to teach at a brand new school.

You'd have insurance, sick pay and some of the goodies.

You'd get your foot in the door. And move to a different grade next year.

A school close is great thinking the cost of gas.

I think there is a big jump from 2nd to 3rd, but not a big jump from 3rd to 4th.

    Wishing you the best.

I think 4th grade would be a nice age to teach. If you student taught 3rd grade, I think you would be okay for 4th, too. :) Good luck whatever you decide!

Definitely go to the interview if you can. Fourth grade isn't that bad and remember a lot of times once you get into a school you can change grades the following year if there is an opening that you would prefer and who knows you may love fourth grade.

Yeah, Brandi, each subject area test cost 25 dollars. Now, the General Knowledge Test consists of 4 subtests: Reading, Math, English Language Skills and an essay. If you take each one separately it costs 25 dollars each but if you take it all at once then it only costs the initial 25. But here's the catch it cost 100 dollars to add it to your certificate. The entire FTCE consists of the Professional Education Test, the GKT and a subject area test. Depending on your circumstances, a candidate would have to take one,two or all three of them.

Don't forget there is the PRAXIS and then there is the PRAXIS II. :) Two different kettles of fish so to speak. The PRAXIS II is expensive.

I don't know if this link will work, but it gives all the information for the state of Ohio. :)

    http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/...nnel=d378197a484f4010VgnVCM10000022f95190RCRD

The first section is the Praxis I. Then, it gets into the PLT and Praxis II bit. It costs a lot of money, because after you pay for the PLT you then also have to pay for your area of licensure. Not to mention if you want to add endorsements.

Ah, the ETS has quite the little racket going on.

    You're welcome. :)

The PLT was the hard part, I thought. It was mostly essay and they wanted specific points hit with the essay answers. I considered it to be the most difficult test I have ever took.

The actual Special Education Praxis I took wasn't all that bad. Neither was the Early Childhood one. I've been told that the Reading Specialist one is pretty wicked, but it has been a while since I took it.

Mostly they're just intimidating. You're shut in a room with other test takers for the entire allotted time slot (between 1 and 2 hours). You cannot leave for the restroom. You must present photo ID and have it on your desk at all times. You must fill in the bubbles as stated. :D

I'm very glad I'm done with them.

If you are a military spouse, register for Spouse to Teachers...and they will pay for it...Call your FLeet and family services or education office on base and see what you can find out....

i know that they will pay up to 600 bucks for us to take those tests BUT you have to register with them prior to taking the test and then get reimbursed.....

    good luck...

    oh...almost forgot...

i took several versions of the PRAXIS II 0011 0012 0014 and I did not think they were hard at all.....i bought the eBooks from ets and did well above the required minimum for each one....

now, in VA, I also had to take a communication and literacy test as well as a reading assessment much like the one Cali requires called the VRA...THAT was the hardest test I have ever taken. I had forgetten to take my meds that morning and was EXTREMELY tired during the test but muddled through with flying colors....but, it was hard!

anyway, those praxis exams are not so bad!!

So I didn't get the 4th grade job either. She wanted someone with experience and someone who was already certified. There is an opening for a pre-k position at a private school so I'm faxing my resume to them. It's further than any other school I have applied to... 45 mins to an hour each way. The biggest thing I'm worried about is the pay. So we'll see. As of right now, there are no more job openings in the 2 districts I applied to. With less than 2 weeks until school starts, I feel rather screwed. Anyway, I'll see what happens with the private school. Thanks for all the support!

Try to not give up! I know of lots of people that got their jobs after the school year started. A lot of districts wait to hire because they want to be sure of numbers!!
I hope you hear some positive news soon! I'm thinking of you!!
