Hi there, I feel like packing my bags to teach overseas after my Beijing-based friend raved about it. She's teaching at a private elementary school, saving a ridiculous amount of money, and traveling everywhere. Has anyone gone down this route? Where did you go? I'd love your insights. Thank you!
I saw this thread got buried and am hoping someone outhere has information about this. I too am interested in teaching overseas in either Europe, Australia, or with the DOD.
I taught at an international elementary school in Japan for three years. I'm now in Australia, studying to get extra qualifications, and afterwards I hope to teach here. If you are interested in teaching abroad, you can try looking here: http://www.cois.org/ http://www.search-associates.com/main.html http://www.iss.edu/ I've never gone through one of these, but my understanding is that typically you need to attend a recruitment fair, which is basically an opportunity for several interviews. You need to be relatively open about which part of the world you go to though (typically they say you have to be willing to consider at least 3 continents). However, I've known people who told the agency they were willing to consider lots of places, but they held out for a job in the area they were most interested in. Of course, you can look up international schools in the country/countries you are interested in going to and apply directly as well. Most jobs will require you to be certified with at least 2 years experience. Some jobs won't care as much about experience, but the really cushy jobs will expect you to have 5+ years. If you are really interested in teaching abroad, it's probably in your best interest to learn about the International Baccalaureate Programs (if you don't know about them already). It's quite the trend now for international schools to be switching over to IB curriculums, and even some that don't expect you to know about them. http://www.ibo.org I hope this helps. I'm not an expert or anything, but if you have any other questions, I'll help if I can.
