I have been teaching a SPED class in a private school for several years now. The group I have had the longest are graduating to high school this year. I mentioned to the P that I would really miss this group of students and wish that I could keep them another year. To my surprise, the P said that they wanted to pilot a new 9th grade class and weren't sure I would have agreed to teach it. Absolutely I would teach it! So now I am doing my research to get a 9th grade program going. Just wanted to share my happy surprise.
Yes, at some point in time they want to add a complete high school but it would have to be on other property. We have the space to do a SPED program, and this would benefit the students because there are very few Christian high schools in the area who have self contained classes for special needs students.
You are right. There are not any christian private schools with sped around here. I would love to do that.
I’ve just had a group of students I’ve taught for 2 years graduate middle school (y9). They come back from time to time to tell me about their lives in high school and how they wish I was still their teacher. I feel the same! I wish I had the same opportunity as you! Congratulations!
As someone teaching SPED to a varied age and ability group of teens, I am so happy that your school realizes there can be real positives by expanding the range of another year. Many schools don't, because the teachers lack K-12 certs. When the strength of the teaching staff allows it, it has obvious merit. Best of luck!
