Many of you know about my situation from last week (I had to interview for a different position in my school, and I didn't get it).

So, today I was talking to my principal a bit about summer school. I'm teaching reading to struggling students going into 5th grade. He said that he is interested to see how I like teaching that age group and "looking into different possibilities/options" or something like that. He also said that he made my 4th grade summer school position happen (summer school is highly competitive for teachers in my district). There is a 4th grade teacher at my school retiring after next year...

I'm wondering if that was his "plan" the whole time. The thing is, I don't know if I would want to teach 4th grade. I just wish I was informed of my own career plans!

If it is his plan all along, he must think you are a great teacher. Principals usually move up strong teachers to testing grades.

I would still be cautious. This may just be talk to placate you and other teachers who were upset that you didn't get the job.

I would absolutely think positively about the conversation. I agree that the strongest teachers get placed in testing grades.

I would also take it as a very good sign.

He seems to know your strengths and is planning to utilize them.

I agree with swansong :thumb: and P's do sometimes have great plans for their teachers, but they just aren't allowed to convey the plans to you until all the details have been worked out. Hopefully, this might explain what happened with the 1st grade position. Keeping my fingers crossed that your P really does have great plans for you . . . .

I think it is good news as well, I just wish he had told you that before the interview.

Ps always find a way to keep good teachers. It may not be what you want exactly, but they will always go to bat for the teachers they think are worth it. Good Luck!

    Exactly!

I'm trying not to read too much into it, because I thought he wanted me in first grade. Obviously I was wrong about that!

I never thought about teaching 4th grade, but the 4th grade team at my school is awesome.

4th grade is a great grade to teacher. The students still enjoy so many things and love learning, but they are old enough to have more responsibilities. You may find that you love fourth grade!

I truly believe things happen for a reason!

It just would have saved you a lot of heartache to have been informed upfront if that was his plan. I still don't understand why he couldn't have talked to you about that.
