I teach in a Title 1 School, and I honestly don't expect my parents to give me gifts for Christmas, even though I know that some will. Instead of my parents spending their money on me, I would love for them to spend it on the classroom. Does anyone have a letter they would be willing to share that says this in an elegant way? In addition, what items would you put on a wish list for the parents to buy?

My wish list for my classroom:

    1. Skinny washable markers
    2. Expo dry-erase markers
    3. Cheap paper plates (the ones that are hard to get apart)
    4. Board Games appropriate for kindergarten students
    5. Books for the classroom
    6. Gift cards for classroom projects

What do ya'll think about this? Does anyone else do it as well?

I don't have a letter, but our PTA does a Christmas Tree wish list. All of the teachers fill out die cut ornaments with things they want. You can put things for yourself or things for the classroom. Then if someone wants to buy you something they can take an ornament and purchase something that you want.

I always have a wish list that I put together for the parents in my classroom. I love the wish tree idea, though!

Scented reed diffusers and Caribou Coffee cards? :)
I love this idea- I need to replace Guess Who and Connect Four and I'd love for the kids to choose a game they enjoy for our class.

    Dear First Grade Families,

Each year, as a first grade teacher, I receive many wonderful gifts during the holiday season. Each and every gift has always been greatly appreciated, whether it has been handmade or store bought. However, I have tried a different approach and I have found the students really love it! If you were thinking of purchasing a gift, I would like you to consider something that can be used in our classroom. This way not only will I enjoy the gift, but so will all of the children in the classroom! Please know that a gift is not expected, because after all, you have sent me the best gift in the world this year – your child!

Here is a list of possible ideas:

List what you might need for your room.

I love the sound of Emma's letter.

As a parent, I would totally appreciate knowing what would be of help to my child's class.

As a teacher, this idea is perfect!

You could make a "paper" Christmas tree and place it outside your classroom. Add paper ornaments with one item needed per ornament and if anyone wants to get your classroom anything...they can just pick the ornament.

I'd like to know...what types of items does your classroom need?

We need anything from large to small. I just posted a wish list thread on the kindergarten board. However, mostly it is little things like wiggle eyes, paper towels, paper plates, board games (Candyland, Connect 4, etc.) Just things that all teachers need that add up after a while.

There was another letter similar to this one on this board a few years ago. I wish I had saved it, I liked that one, too. I tried searching for it with no luck. I remember it had a sentence something along the lines of, "If your thoughts turn to me this holiday season..."

    Does anyone remember that??

How funny, T-NY, I did too - homemade wine which the P had to store in the safe until I could carry it out at the end of the day ("way late," so no one would see me toting home a bottle in a brown bag). I also have entirely enough apple ornaments and mugs of any kind to see me through to the next millennium.

I love the letter Emma shared! I have a lot of parents who do shopping over Thanksgiving break - how I wish I had shared this earlier, even in my November newsletter.

Thanks - and Happy Thanksgiving, for the US members!

The funniest part was the gift tag that read, "Thank you for dealing with our child". LOL
