I am in the same boat. My degree is in Management. How am I supposed to pass these test? I am doing a transition to teaching program and passing these test is a requirement. I took the test for the second time yesterday and only passed one part. Now I still have to pass the other three. There is no accurate study material out there to help adequately prepare. I need suggestions and help!

    Indiana Core Assessment: Secondary Education

    Hello all,

I am preparing to get a Career Specialist Permit through alternative licensure and will be taking the IN Core Assessment for Secondary Education, followed by the Social Studies: Sociology content exam. Has anyone taken these tests recently? I feel overwhelmed with information and not sure what I should focus on as far as studying.

    ANY help is so appreciated!

    Thank you!

Glad I have found this post, I have also spent weeks looking for materials to study, information, really ANYTHING to do with these content exams. I had taken and passed my CASA on my first try back in January thankfully. I took my first round of Early Childhood Content exams all in one session the middle of June after the scores were changed, but little did I know ECE were not changed at all. So I failed them one by one a print out saying "Not Pass" was given to me before starting the next exam it was AWFUL. So round two I decided that pay the extra and take them one at a time. Starting with my highest score test which was the Science/Physical Education which was a 211, retested Monday this week and passed. Took my math again today and failed again... not sure on scores since it take 10 days. And am i reading correctly that I have to wait 30 days before I can attempt the math portion again? I tried to remember all the questions and problems, and information from the math test today but it was mostly the standards I felt like I struggled with. If anyone has materials I would love to get them. I don't think I can contact by Private messages yet or not...

I'm trying to find good review content for the Social Studies Exam, did anyone buy the Study Guides or Test Preps from Pearson?
    Thanks, Dan

Anyone pass Lang Arts and Math by any chance? They're kicking my butt! Any suggestions would help!

I have passed the social studies/fine arts portion of the test using Khan Academy. John Green has a crash course on world history. I watched those and reviewed the standards and passed. With the language arts portion I checked out a praxis ll book from the library and studied the language arts section and passed.
I am still struggling with science and math though. If anyone has any advice for passing those it would be appreciated!

I'm missing Lang. Arts and Math by only 6 points. Pretty frustrating. Did you try using Khan Academy for the math part too?

If I remember right.. I think I used a praxis book to pass the science portion.

I'm so glad I found this thread. I taught in IL for four years. Decided to stay home with my family for four years. Now im back and got a job in IN. I was on a reciprocal license the past year. I just was forced to resign bc I can't pass the math or ss tests. I had to leave my class before second semester started. I wish I would have know before how hard these tests were and prepared myself better. I am a highly effective teacher according to all of my RISE evaluations, but since I can't pass these tests I no longer have a classroom. It has caused havoc with the parents and the students are in distress over it. I'm so glad I'm not alone in this. Any advise besides khan academy on how to pass these two exams? TIA

I moved here from IL last year. I have a reciprocal license. My Il teachers license is good until 2018, so I can keep reapplying for a recip. I am having trouble passing the math and ss tests too. I am trying to find some tuttoring but have not had much luck. I am getting very discouraged because the last time I took the math test I got a 215, the first time I took it I got a 198. I took it today and got a "not pass" if you find something to help in passing these two tests please share.

    Hello,

I am in a similar situation. I graduated last May and was offered a job right away. I have passed all of the CORE exams, including the mild intervention, except for the math :(. I keep getting 110 or 115, so I know I am only a few questions off.

A professor recommended using Khan Academy. Has anyone had any luck or know of other study materials that works? I know there is something called Mometrix, but I don't know anything about it!

Khan Academy is free, and comes pretty well recommended: it was started when Sal Khan got tired of answering the same math questions from his (very large) extended family. Start with content you believe you know, and work your way through the videos (which are mostly 3 minutes or so) and the associated practice questions.

If Khan is not your cup of hemlock, you're not alone. Try Math Is Fun; the web site is www.mathsisfun.com (I think: could be .org). If that doesn't work for you, rummage around on Richard Byrne's blog Free Technology for Teachers, www.freetech4teachers.com.

Thank you for recommending this site! I have started watching the videos, and I am very intrigued with all of the information. I am not very good with history, but John Greene makes it more fun to listen to. Have you passed your math or Science? I checked out some Praxis books from the library for those tests as well. It helps to see what areas to focus on. Also, I tried to remember as many of the questions as I could to help study when I was at home. A lot of the math and science is from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade standards so look at those and see what you can find based on that. It took me a couple times to pass, but I finally did it. I hope this helps. I have my SS exam next Saturday so pray for me!

I have the Mometrix book, and it is okay. The math information isn't too bad, but you really need to look at the standards for the upper grades because I had a lot of questions on those especially 6th grade. Try some practice questions online, and it will definitely help.

Did you use the practice questions from the practice tests that are available on Pearson?

I tried the practice tests available on Pearson, but I didn't find it very helpful at all. I meant to try practice questions the kids would do. Check out IXL Math to look at some of the 5th and 6th grade skills. You can get a trial run for about a week I think. I had many questions on Area (Circle & half-circle); median, mode, range; volume; pythagorean theorem; angles, and PI.

Do you know whether or not they provide a formulas cheat sheet and online calculator? The registration page says they do, but I haven't read about it anywhere else. I'm taking the math exam for the first time Thursday. Not expecting to pass. Doing it more for the practice. Need more study time! Good luck! Let us know how you do!

I was able to pass all of the content exams on the first try except for the math, which I'm taking for the first time this week. I'm very nervous about it but figure if I don't pass it's good practice.

But I wanted to share what worked for me to pass the other sections.

    1. I took each sub-test a week apart.
    2. I studied the standards.
    3. I read the practice test questions, answers, and explanations aloud into my phone and listened to it on the way to the test. (I had an hour's drive.) Both reading them aloud and listening later helped me internalize some of the strange academic wording and understand the expectations of the test.
    4. I skipped the questions that were hard, flagged them, then went back and answered them. Kept them flagged, reviewed them again. Ripped apart the question to understand what it was really asking. Sometimes I'd write out the words "most effective" or "primary" (if those were words in the question -- I don't remember) and focus on that when answering because all the answers were many times quite reasonable options.

I will say that I thought the special ed mild intervention test that I purchased from the Pearson site (I purchased all the practice tests) was very helpful in preparing. I felt the social studies practice test was the least helpful. The science prep test was helpful in knowing what to remember each grade level is expected to learn. For the science test, really study those standards and it will help a lot. Make sure you understand the standards for physical science and earth science -- not just what the standards are, but how and why to teach them.

For the reading and language arts, make sure you know the specifics on reading levels/scaffolding/reading development. I can't remember what to tell you about the Language Arts. I do think the Pearson prep test was helpful, but not completely helpful. It was the first test I took, and if I were to do it again, I'd have studied the standards more.

    Hope that helps!

I'd love any advice on the math sub-test. I'm using Kahn Academy, the pracitice test from Pearson, the CORE Test site called ExamEdge and am studying the standards. Any advice is sure welcome! Or a math brain transfusion! Math is very hard for me.

    Good luck, everyone!

I have just recently passed the s.s. and reading exams for Indiana Elementary Education Generalist. I got a score of 235 on s.s. and a score of 220 on the reading. I am trying to pass science and math before summer so when school starts next year, I will be able to get a job and have a classroom of my own! If anyone needs help with social studies and/or reading, or if you can help me with math and/or science, please PM me.

What kind of study guide for math? I haven't found anything except the practice test and the blue print. I have passed all but math. I failed it twice and honestly do not know how I will pass it without any study materials.

New members can't yet private message. Please find some threads in one of the education forums to post on: it doesn't take all that long.

In the meantime, please don't post personal or professional email links on A to Z. One wouldn't want a spambot coming along to harvest that information and inflict a pile of spam on you.

I'm new here, but I've enjoyed reading the posts and they've all been very helpful. I'm taking the English/Language Arts content exam on Saturday. Has anyone taken this? Hoping to gain some insight aside from the 15 sample questions they offer. I'm considering buying the practice test just to get an idea of what's on it.

Also, I passed everything on my CASA test except for the math part, so I have to retake it. Any tips on how to pass that would be much appreciated as well!

Cole, I never had to take the CASA so I can't help you there, but I just took the reading part two weeks ago and passed it. I have a study guide that I made that could help you if you'd like. Don't buy the questions, I bought them and have those as well. :)

Yes! That would be great. So this is for the English/Language Arts content exam, correct? How can I get these from you?

That will be a huge help and will save me $30!

Hi Andrew! I am also studying for the reading test (038). I lucked out and got my license when Praxis was still available.
I ended up getting a job in a middle school and I am teaching Reading. I have a reading endorsement on my license, but it only extends to 6th grade. This new pearson test is PK-12th grade only. This is my fourth time taking this test and I am no where near passing each time. I will lose my job of two years if I cannot pass this test. Any suggestions?

I unfortunately am also having trouble passing the reading test. I am trying to take the reading test for elementary education. I have been studying the online Pearson practice tests but that is putting me close to passing but that is all so far.

For an English/language arts content test, the Single Subject Tests subforum might be a more fruitful choice. For a test of reading instruction, try the Other Tests subforum. In either case, don't skip the threads that focus on other states' tests: where the domains or content areas are comparable, these tests tend to show more similarities from state to state than they do differences.

Unfortunately, there is no practice tests or study materials for my test. I am really upset about this whole thing. The closest score I got was a 208, but then I went right back down to a 190 the third time I took it. Teaching 120 students plus taking this test constantly is really next to impossible. I will be forced to resign at the end of this year if I cannot pass. It really stinks.

You may try looking at the website 240 tutoring. They may have some study stuff for your test. I am using it to study for my test, but cant say if it helped until I take my test again.
