Inappropriate post? Report, don't respond

Veteran members of A to Z Forums will remember, and newer members need to know, how to deal with posts that are inappropriate in any way - whether on grounds of content or language (including but not limited to overtly political posts) or personal attack or spam, or merely just being "off".

    Here's how:

Please report the post using the "Report" link at the bottom of the post, in the same line as the posting member's username to the left and the "Reply" link to the right.

"Reporting" a post generates a notice linked to the offending post that goes to the moderators, including the site owner; one or more of us will have a look. Use good judgment, but in general the moderators would rather deal with a few false alarms than discover after the fact that a thread has gone nuclear. The report also gives you as A to Z member a safe place to vent your spleen about the inappropriateness (and the moderators might even agree).

Responding in the original thread, on the other hand, makes a bigger mess for the moderator to clean up, especially if the post is trolling. For one thing, any post that quotes the offending material will almost certainly also need to be pruned to get rid of the offending material; for another, responding in kind is a good way to get yourself banned.

Very true, TG. Also, remember that brand new members do not have permission to post links - or to allude to an address in ways meant to get around the rule. Please refrain from encouraging them. Ignore the links and don't respond to the OP. Thank you.

Look on the left-hand side of the box (but to the right of the username box where it shares the statistics/picture). It should have:
(Username), (Day of Post) at (Time of Post) Report

For example, your post that I can see has:
Mr Magoo, Today at 4:18 PM Report

Hm. That link may not show up for relatively new members.

Does your posts look like this? See "Report" in the middle?

The "warn" key is only for moderators, but the missing "report" one is odd, especially since you're over 100 posts.

This should be what it looks like. You are well over the minimum for being a full member.

I wish we got some kind of response when we reported posts. I've started reporting more instead of replying, but I always wonder who is reading the reports... (I reported a mod's post once... Oops!)

Haha, MissCeliaB. No problem. All the mods see all the reported posts immediately (if we are on the boards). Sometimes posts will magically 'disappear', at least from the member's view, but they are being moderated. Warning points can be issued, posts can be deleted, sent to Amanda, even edited.

TeacherGroupie et al are definitely helping me figure out how to do the technical side of moderation. Thank you for remembering we're all people. The last round of moderating reminded me that I need to have a thicker skin even when I'm not in the classroom.

All I can suggest, PallasAthena, is that you keep emailing: your emails will reach the only person who can do anything about most of the issues you mention.

Moderators have not the slightest power over the point at which a member can PM or delete his/her own messages.

That IS really weird, PallasAthena. If you can get directly to Amanda's profile page, you might be able to contact her from there. She's the one who has the power to make corrections like that.

It's possible that the Report link doesn't appear for very new members.

oeccseo, tell us what the thread is, and one or another of the moderators will have a look.

    Hi,
How would one go about brainstorming ways to monetize content or ways to drive content to one's blog?
I don't want to infringe on any forum rules.
    Thanks,
    Emmanuel

That isn't something that would normally be discussed in a forum for, by, and about teachers.

Although in the past there was a report link, on my screen, it is now MIA. I hadn't missed it until I was concerned about the post of Sand***** with a link to someplace selling something. When I went to report the link, my report link was no where to be found. I believe I have the requisite number of posts. Thanks.

Much better chance of resolving inappropriate posts using the report button instead of possibly escalating a thread that is inappropriate. The sooner the moderators are aware of these threads or posts, the easier it is for them to clean up the parts that are inappropriate. That said, no moderator is available 24/7, so instantaneous shouldn't be the true goal. IMO they do a great job.
