We don't have the means to take the kids anywhere this summer. What are some fun in-house field trips we could plan?

In addition to all of the theme parties that take you our of your regular routines like "jungle day", we enjoy inviting the children's museum, pet stores, cooks, librarians and our music class in for events.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but it brings back a memory of my nephew's first preschool field trip. It was to the bus, parked in their parking lot. And my nephew cried.

We have had the fire department come with a fire truck and a couple fo firefighters who demonstrate different things and talk to the kids about fires safety and they get to sit int he firetruck and they practice things like stop drop roll and 'don't hide-go outside", we have a children's story teller that comes, and a traveling barnyard that comes as well. We;ve had a children's magician and a puppet lady too. One place to look for resources is the lobrary-- the public libraray usually ahs a list of those type of things

My brother is a tractor trailer driver and one year we were learning or addressess and talked about why we have addresses. We ended up trackinf him from Texas back here to home. Everyday at 9 we called him to see what he was doing. We charted what we thought he would be doing before we called-- sleeping, eating breakfast, driving, etc. It turned out his delivery was only a couple of blocks from the cente so when he got emptied he drove over to the center and parked in the parking lot and we took the kids out and they got to get in the tractor and see all the things (the bunk beds, the tv, the potty, the radios, the phone, etc) and then they got to run around int he empty trailer. They love it! It was spur of the moment but we have a permission slip that the parents sign at the beginning of the year that is good for the whole year that allows us to take the children for walks aorund the immediete area and on onsite field trips. Actually the bus idea is a good one for kids who have never been on a bus and who will be --gets them the chance to at least see what it looks like inside and stuff.

You could invite a dentist to come and talk to the class and share about dental hygiene. Also, any animal/nature parks and recreation members may be able to come to the classroom and share the animals and plants.

Invite family members, friends, community members to come and share with the class. They can play instruments, cook with the children, etc.

talk to your families. often they are a treasure trove of ideas waiting to help. you may have a hiker, or a garbage man and not really even be thinking of it. those speakers that are vested in your group are the best!

The ER nurses at one of the local hospitals when I worked in Madison, WI would come in and let our kids monitor their heart rates, look at x-rays, and get a finger cast made. The kids loved it.
