Yes! And Jem. They are the ones who told me to apply! I can't even believe this. There are only 2 teachers from Nebraska, and I am one of them!

    HOOOOOORAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have such an excellent time! If I get the astronomical society job, I can apply for advanced-maybe we can go together (it would be next summer). The whole things is so wonderful and fun. And the food isn't half bad. Bring lots of spending money, as the gift shops are everywhere, and so tempting. I wear my NASA sweatshirt every day. And where your flight suit every chance you get. You'll never get to do that again, unless it's Halloween or you wear it during open house.

I still stay in touch with my team-we e-mail updates all the time. You will build a new group of friends that is priceless, so socialize and get wacky. We did karaoke at least three times that week, along with late dinners out and trips to Walmart. Now that I think about it, it's kind of like college all over again...

Here are my pictures so you can get even more excited: http://www.flickr.com/photos/erikuppman/sets/72157605926037635/

Oh-and they have a group meet you at the airport and they are all in space flight suits, and they cheer for you when they see you. It's so stinkin' cool.

Oh-I just thought of something. When you arrive, they will have you fill out what you want on your nametag. I put 'Mission Specialist Uppman'. You might want to do some research on the different positions on the space shuttle so you know what you want to put on the nametag. Then you can request to do that job in the simulations (you'll do two of them). You can also get another nametag custom made for you at the gift shops, but it's another $5. My team kept making weird ones of everyone with their new nicknames on them.

Oh, and we got white t-shirts from Wal-mart and decorated them the last night. I still get pictures from my team wearing them. So that's a fun idea to do.

Thanks Jem! I knew you'd be a lot of help! I am still just jumping in my shoes!

Except for, my daughters think I'm going to space, and were kind of freaking out (Mom! You could die!) So we had to do some research.

DH is certainly jealous! He is a private pilot, and wants to go with me. It's funny, 'cause he works with a guy who was one of my best friends when we were little, and we used to play Space Camp all the time. We would watch that movie with Lea Thompson in it about a zillion times, and tip his TV chairs over backwards, and play Mission Control. So today, when I called dh to tell him at work, this guy overheard him and was jealous also!

So, is anyone else from here going?

They have a parent/kid camp going on at the same time teachers are there. Your dh could take the girls and go down and experience it as well.....

    This is too cool!

I just requested info from Honeywell on their Space Camp grants. I always wanted to go when I was a little kid. It's so weird that you posted about this just as I started thinking about going. :D

    Congrats!

I just heard about the Honeywell grants a few weeks ago at Mini-CAST in North Texas. One of the presenters had been to space camp and wore her flight suit for the entire presentation (so cool).

I was excited to learn about the space ship tile that I could request from NASA. It was a really good workshop and I am still going through the papers so I can use them in 5th grade Earth Science.

I'm jealous you are going. It is something I'll have to look into for next year!

The application is due December 31 of every year. I don't know when they were available-I filled mine out on December 30! But I knew about it before then, just didn't have the time to do it.

I had to look at the list again today, just to make sure they didn't change their minds! Good news, I was still on it.

    Congratulations!

Don't forget to save room in your suitcase for the free teacher resource stuff. They have a special teachers center where you used to get up to five video tapes of some of their projects(you provide the blank tapes). It may be DVD's now. Plus they have posters, photos and other materials just for the taking. Don't forget your camera too.

Another place to go is the Botanical Gardens. Its really nice this time of the year.

You will LOVE it! Pack light and save room for the freebies. My roommate went to Walmart and bought an additional carryon to take everything home. Besides, you leave your room early in the morning and return after dinner so I didn't wear half of the clothes I took. Enjoy every minute.

Congratulations to both of you! We don't live too far from there and my 4 year old gets so excited to see her "rocket" when we drive by on the way to grandma's house. She even drew pictures of our family in in our rockets. The desktop picture on my computer at school has us "walking" on the moon when they had a free admission day in September.
I agree to make certain you get all the free materials and resources that are available at the educator center. I still receive their Sun Earth Day materials in the mail every year.
