We're getting right down to the wire at my school for the year, and I've got one class that has just not cared about anything the entire year. They have the worst average of all my classes, many of them are failing or have a D, and a good chunk of them are probably going to have to go to summer school to avoid having to repeat the grade. I passed out a study guide for their final exam, and I'm giving them 3 days in class to work on it, using notes, working with partners, and being able to ask me questions. As I'm walking around the class, I noticed over half the kids in this particular class either just sitting there like knots on logs, or talking to their friends, or doing anything else besides the study guide. I want to say to them, "this is why your grades are garbage, this is why you're probably going to fail this class". But then I think, if they haven't cared up until this point, what can I say now that will make any difference? That feeling has really bummed me out a few times during the year. TL;DR-one of my classes doesn't care about their grades, and it bums me out that nothing I say will make any difference at all to some of them.
