I saw my classroom yesterday and found out the kids have built in cubbies in the room! The cubbies are pretty narrow - maybe 10 inches wide, 6 or so inches tall, and a little more than a foot deep. Inside the wooden hole is a clear container that fills up almost the whole space and pulls out, almost like a little drawer. I would be able to label these.

The kids also have individual desks where they could store their things, rather than large tables.

I'm teaching first grade. What would you advise using the cubbies for?

How about using them for your kid's independent reading books? And they could keep the other supplies in their desks.

If your students don't have a need for them, you could use them for your own storage.

I have my SSR materials in the cubbies. When they come to school in the morning, they just grab their things and go get started. They are seperate from the other materials and ready to be used without digging for them in another spot, like a desk.

Lunch boxes, homework folders, etc can also go in the cubbies.

I think they might be a bit narrow for most picture books unless they're more like the little readers that come with the basal series... I'll have to try putting a few books in and figuring it out. :)

I have cubbies without the plastic containers. The kids keep their personal supplies in them. I teach K so we don't have many textbooks to deal with.

I used cubbies for their take home items. I would have kids who finished with their work early, and they could pass back papers without disturbing the other kids working.
