Does anyone here use groups to teach middle school math? I teach in a small private school with one HR per grade. Next year, our 8th grade class is so small we are combining the grade 7 and 8 HRs. They will be combined for some classes, separate for others. It is scheduled for them to be separate for math. We generally do algebra in 8th and pre-algebra in 7th. However, since I had next year's 8th grade this year for math, I know they are at different levels and not all are ready for algebra, and certainly not at the same pace. I suspect next year's 7th grade is going to display the same differences. I know I want to group them for math to teach everyone at an appropriate level, I'm just not sure how I'm going to do it. Does anyone have any experience with this? Ideas? Suggestions?
