hi there i am new to this. i love sharing teaching ideas! wondering if anyone has some good ideas for a community helpers unit for sk? thanks!
Our K teachers each dressed up as a community helper, brought along a prop that the community helper would use, and presented a program to the K students. Having the real thing there would be even better!
When I was student teaching my ct used this video to teach her students about community helpers. It's on brainpop jr. If you don't have a membership, you can use a free trial to view the video. http://www.brainpopjr.com/socialstudies/communities/communityhelpers/preview.weml
Last year we had a parent volunteer (just ask parents if anyone is interested) call around and set up times with various community helpers to come and visit and talk to us about what they do. We had Police Officers, Firefighters, Dentist, and a Vet come in.
We did a community helper word web with our kinders a couple of weeks ago. We started by writing the word "student" on the white board. We asked the students to tell us which helping adult do they deal with the most, and the kids answered "Mom and/or Dad", so we wrote that and drew a line to the word "student". And so on. We ended up with a web of the entire community. It included the garbage man and the vet and the librarian. All these people in the communities that helped the students in their lives. It was a lot of fun. Sheilah
