I know there has been threads like this before, but I've been a bit busy with graduating from my program and working on my certification and not to forget~interviewing!!! I haven't been able to join you guys on the forum for a while. Anyway, can anyone help me build a reading list for the summer that would be a great teacher resource for new teachers???? I have already read "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong and I am excited to implement those ideas. But I have another month to go before school starts and I want to be reading up on new and interesting ideas while I anticipate this new job!!!(I did my demo lesson last week and it went really well!!!Just waiting on a call). Please list your favorite teacher resource books for me. I've been on Ebay and Amazon searching for some. Thanks alot!:thanks: :p :p

An absolute must is Tools for Teaching by Fred Jones. It is just as good (if not better than Harry Wong's).

Good luck with the job. Let us know when you get it! :D

I would suggest reading Fountas and Pinnells' Guiding Readers and Writers and/or Regie Routman's books. These books would lead you more towards teaching practices.

Good luck... hopefully you will hear something positive within the next couple of days. Let us know. :p

I like The Tough Kids Book for creative management ideas--a very quick read as well.

The Organized Teacher by Mcgraw Hill and How to Organize Your Classroom Teacher Created Resources.

Both of these books are excellent resources on setting up and maintaining an organized classroom.

And reading these forum threads are an excellent source of information.

    Have an excellent 1st year!

    Books!

It would depend on whether you are teaching elementary, middle, or high school. I teach middle/high school and Harry Wong books are less than helpful. Here are three that I really enjoyed and have read over and over:

The Essential 55: An Award-Winning Educator's Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child by Ron Clark (ISBN: 1401300014)

Teaching Outside the Box : How to Grab Your Students By Their Brains by LouAnne Johnson (ISBN: 0787974714)

Discipline Survival Kit for the Secondary Teacher (J-B Ed:Survival Guides) by Julia G. Thompson (ISBN: 0876284349)

I am sure that there are others, but I LOVE these! Has anyone else read these?

    Ditto:
    Teaching with Love & Logic
    Teaching Outside the Box

These are very practical and user friendly rather than tons of research done by people who seem to have never set foot in a classroom.

I really can't speak for or against the others. I haven't read them. I tend to find one book I really like and do "in-depth research" on the techniques for a while before I start on something else so I haven't done as much professional reading as the other people on this thread.

Reading with Meaning by Debbie Miller (comprehension strategies)
Starting with Comprehension by Andie Cunningham and Ruth Shagoury

Also what JaimeMarie recommended above (especially The First Six Weeks of School).

Stephanie Harvey's book Strategies that Work is very much like Reading with Meaning but is geared more for 3, 4, and 5.

Thanks so much everyone!!!!:p I have actually heard of some of the books that you guys listed like "The First Six Weeks of School" and "The Morning Meeting" book!! Thanks for reassuring me that those books are great investments for a new teacher!! I would hate to purchase them if they do not contain effective strategies, you know?? (These books can get a bit expensive).
If anyone have any other suggestions, please, please, please share with me. Thanks again!!:p :p :thanks:
