Hello, I want to make a website and wondered if anyone knew an easy way to start one. I want it to be fun and easily accessible, I also want to make it easy for me to make. I don't know where to start one and how to use it. I want to use HTML codes, I have myspace and it's easy for me to copy and paste
Website I am in the same boat as you-do you mind if I piggy back off your post? I don't have much info either-I want to create one too-I have one through my district but you can't do much to it. here is a place were you can get some fun grapics http://www.thistlegirldesigns.com/ I plan on getting my graphics and templates from them-I am doing a jungle theme and they are so cute.
I use Edublogs. It is free, they host it for you (doesn't eat up space on your school server), you get a ton of storage. You can create in either visual or HTML mode. You can add images, videos, feeds, avatars, etc. Even though this is a "blog" creating site, I treat mine very much like a website (I am the only one that adds content). Edublogs has GREAT support when you get stuck. I have created a manual for edublogs for my coworkers BUT Edublogs made an upgrade a few weeks ago, the manual needs to be updated but it may be close enough to get you started. Check out my 2 sites and see what you think: My classroom site: http://readerswriters.edublogs.org My (co-authored) tech site: http://empoweredtech.edublogs.org The manual is on the teacher items page.
I use googlepages. I don't know if you can do it in HTML. I use their format because I find it to be easier. It's free and they give you 100MB of space.
www.1and1.com. Domains are super cheap (around $7/year), and it's super cheap each month. I think it was $5 a month for 10 pages, and $10 a month for unlimited pages. They give you tons of templates to choose from, and you can modify them a bit if you want. You can insert pictures and podcasts and videos and text. I love it. Super easy to use, and it's how I make all my sites. I have pages set up for each kid this year on our classroom site, so they can type up entries each day and upload pictures. It will be their brag page. classroom site: www.mrs.uppman.com brag pages: http://www.mrs.uppman.com/21.html
Can you add your own graphics as well? I just purchased some cute templates and graphics that I want to add to my site when I get it up and running.
Yeah, I've never paid for any graphics or clip art. There is a button where you just upload any file on your computer. You can make it a link, or an actual picture on your site. I modify art I find on websites all the time. I use Mary Engelbreit art and clip art from Microsoft Clip Art Gallery. The only thing is that you can't change the backgrounds. I think on teacher web or something you can import those really nice 'scrapbooking' like backgrounds. With 1and1, you have to use one of their templates. I don't mind, because I really like my layout. But if you want to get really creative, that might be a problem.
I use teacher web. It's only $27 for the year. You can upload images and everything. It's very user friendly. http://www.teacherweb.com/
I would first check with your school district in regards to hosting. My school provided webspace for free. To create my page I just used good old fashion html codes and notepad. Just type nameofpage.html in the notepad. I LOVED using this site to help me with my webpage.
Very easy. Last year they allowed you to do a trial web site as long as you paid by Sept(don' remember exact date). I played around with it to see if it was something I could do easily. I know next to nothing about creating web pages. HTML I have no clue. This was the site for me.
TeacherWeb is very easy to use. That was the main reason I created my website with them. Now that I've taught myself some html coding I can still be very creative with TeacherWeb. They do offer a 30-day free trial too. I think the price is now $39/year, but you do get a group discount with the more people that have subscriptions from your school. Our principal pays for our entire staff to have a site on here! BevAnn http://www.teacherweb.com/NM/PajaritoElementary/BeverlyRomero/
Thanks Sasha & BevAnn! Love ur theme, BA. I would like to do one with the jungle/forest theme. The graphics that are on ur site, did u upload or do they have a library of icons/images? Ah, I might just sign up for the free trial to play with it & see if I want to do it. More to the list!
GooglePages.com is also a free tool that you can use to create a website. I found the site to be very user friendly.
Thanks Thanks! I will have to change it all for next year as we are doing a school-wide theme of Teamwork. I am looking forward to the challenge of changing the graphics, backgrounds, etc, but I will miss the Hollywood theme.
TeacherWeb does have a library of clipart that you can use, but you can also upload your own. I got most of mine from ThistleGirl Designs. She does have a couple of Jungle Themed graphics sets!
Be careful when using images that others have created: you don't want to get into trouble for violating copyright.
http://www.thistlegirldesigns.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=150 Does anyone know if I would be able to use that in GooglePages? I would hate to purchase it and not be able to use it.
You've asked two questions, Calalilys. (a) What image formats does GooglePages support? That, you need to go to GooglePages for. I would expect it's explained fairly clearly (b) Do you have permission to use designs from a given Web site on line? For that, you need to check the Web site you're getting them from. Fortunately, there are lots of Web sites with graphics that are free to teachers.
Website Bev Ann I went to ThistleGirls and purchased the Safari Babies Template and Monkey graphics. I wasn't sure bf where I had seen their graphics and it was your site-so thanks for posting that site.:2up:
Copyright issues? Use creative commons images. Go to http://creativecommons.org/ and search for images by clicking "Search CC licensed work." Then, choose the tab of your search engine. If you find an image you like, select it, and scroll down for the licensing requirements (icons, when you roll over them the description pops up, click on the icon and the requirements pop up). Most of the work can be used for free. Some requires you to include the author's name, etc.
I just made one on www. classjump.com I'm not sure about it yet. I guess it's more of a blog type thing. I really have no experience with this sort of thing so we'll see if I like it. I'd like to try out some of the other ones people are talking about too. Here's mine: http://www.classjump.com/mrsfewells6thgradeclass/index.php eta: it's free!
Thanks for sharing, another one to consider! Good to know that there are many out there that are free. As someone mentioned previously, Googlepages is free & easy to use. I've played with it some what & found it fairly easy.
I use Angelfire to create my website, I like it a lot but you do have to know HTML. I purchased the Camping Kids set from Thistle Girl Designs. My main page is up, but I am still working on all of the sections. http://misscolvinsclass.angelfire.com
I am still not sure if I purchase the templates off of thistle, or whatever, if I can use them for angelfire or what?
On her site it says, "Please note: You need to have your own domain for these templates to work correctly, not a free site such as yahoo or geocities." I would assume they would not work with angelfire since it is also a free site.
I decided to use anglefire as a temporary home for my website (I'm not working for a school district anymore, who was my host). I like how it allows me to do html coding. Anyways, Deb, how did you get the anglefire banner ads to move to the bottom of your page? Thanks.
When I created my index page on Angelfire, I used the advanced editor setting. When you do your HTML coding, put any <body> tags at the bottom of your coding. This will move the banners to the bottom. If your body tags are at the beginning, the banners will be at the top.
Is there anyway I can look at your coding? It doesn't seem to be working. Or, at least just the part that involves the body part? NEVERMIND! I figured it out! THanks! ETA: Okay, here is my index page. No other pages work, but here is what I got done today. WHew!!! It was mostly just trying to figure out how anglefire works. But, now that I got it under control, I can now have some fun!
Did you purchase your template from Thistle Girl?? That would answer New3rdTeacher's question about whether or not they are compatible which Angelfire.
Yes, I got it from Thistle Girl. What you have to do to make it work is go into the basicstyle sheet text, and change some of the coding around in order to make it work for anglefire. BUT, it does work.
This summer I would like to revamp my blog/website that I made last year. I want to make a site that has cute and unique graphics. Do I have to know html to do this? On the thistle girl website it says that you can copy her code for the pages and just edit it as needed to set up your site. This sounds great but I'm wondering if you have to use html every time you want to update your site. For example, if I want to add tonight's homework, do I need to know html? Can anyone help?
Well, it depends on what program you are using to create your website. Some of us are crazy and prefer to use html and css. Whereas others have no clue what css is and use a program that does all the coding for them. All you have to do is fill in the blanks in the templage. Angelfire is the host I'm currently using and I like it because it allows me to do html and css coding. BUT, they also allow you to use their template so that you don't have to worry about coding. Meaning, you don't have to type in <a href="blahblah.com"></a> or <img src="picture.gif">
I use freewebs.com They are very user friendly and they are free with the option to upgrade. http://www.freewebs.com/mrsfieldsclass/
Scholastic also has a free homepage for your classroom. It's a really easy template. It's at http://www.scholastic.com/classhomepage.
My oldest son creates web pages and I talked to him about creating one for me. His suggestion was to use one of the "ready-made" sites or blogs until I become familiar with what I want and what I need in a web page. I've used scholastic for a couple of years, but want to branch out a bit so with a little time I will be playing around till I find what I'm interested in having. Just thought I'd add my two cents worth!
