does anyone have suggestions for making this work well?

my district is really pushing themed units. this is an issue for me for two reasons:

i generally suck at unit planning
add a theme to something I already suck at and well, you get the gist.

So, any resources, tips, etc. are much appreciated.

I sorted through stuff online and came up with themes that *might* work for my classes. The harder part will be gathering all the right reading materials.

    Here's what I have:

    September-Constructing Identities
    October-Life Lessons in Reading
    November-Freedom and Responsibility
    December-Decisions, Actions, & Consequences
    January-Culture: Values, Beliefs, and Rituals
    February-Adversity, Conflict, and Change
March-Our View of the World and Ourselves
    April-Relationships and Community
    May-Social Justice
    June-?

It isn't perfect. I may change some along the way if I think of themes that are better.

I really like some of your themes, perplexed!

I'm having to redo everything with a switch in grade levels this year. I've held off on a lot of specific planning, because I really need to see this class in action. On paper, it's a little scary--1/3 are identified Special Ed and I'm their support (as well as their teacher--complicated).

I'm a bit rushed this morning--it's our first day back--but I'll try to get back to this after school.

Wow! A theme a month? I was thinking a theme a quarter! Plus, I'm implementing this into Reader's Workshop, so the theme has to cross our common reading, but won't be part of their independent reading.
