I just found out my results for the exam and I failed by one point. I registered to retake it again but now I don't know what else to do. I have that Cliffnotes book of the test and I thought it would help me pass it, I studied it like crazy and there were only a few questions it helped me with. I got one question about what a bus driver should do when a tornado is coming and I honestly didn't know the answer.

Look, I just don't know what to do now. I feel if I study the book again, it won't help me again. I can't find any prep coursework from universities about it like the ones they have for the SAT and GRE. Will someone please help me on what else to study?! I had the Cliffnotes book for it and it didn't help. I don't know what to do...

It's entirely possible that you and Cliff's just aren't a match. (This is why I tell anyone who holds still long enough that it's wise to examine any prep book before actually shelling out money for it. The book that's perfect for your best friend may be wrong for you, just as the guy who makes her heart flutter may not be who you want to take home.)

Does your score report give any indication of areas in which you could stand to improve? (If you're supposed to get a printed score report, or official scores in some other format, it will probably contain performance indicators or diagnostic indicators or whatever they're called in your state.)

I got that one because the other books they had for it had misspellings and they changed competencies over the years, this book was the most recent one they made and everyone liked Cliffnotes, I thought it would be the best one to get. Reviews for the other books available were terrible.

All it tells me is that I didn't pass and my numerical score was 199 and I needed at least a 200 or higher on it to pass. It doesn't give me any specifics on which areas I needed to improve on. All it tells me is I can get a Score Verification report on it but it costs $25 and the centers they do it in ARE MILES AWAY FROM MY HOUSE LIKE A LOT OF MILES AWAY TO WHERE IT WOULD TAKE HOURS TO GET TO. I've been trying to find a college that offers prep work for it like the SAT or GRE, they posted bulletins on it but I can't remember who does the prep work for that.

I honestly just don't know what to do anymore for this test, I really don't. I feel really depressed right now and I feel like an idiot.

Okay, so you're very, very close. Here's a TeacherGroupie hug. The good news is that, with a score that close, you can get through this on the next try.

Do you have the Competencies document for this test that at http://www.fldoe.org/asp/ftce/pdf/60ElementaryEducationK-6.pdf? If not, download it and use it to guide you as you plunder the Internet for the content that you need.

Many takers of this test - and other states' teacher tests - find they do at least as well making up their own study guide as they do buying one of the commercially produced guides.

    Hi meeper22,

I found this FREE WEB BASED online study guide for the Elementary K-6 exam extremely helpful. It is put out by the Florida Department of Education Bureau of Exceptional Student Education:

    http://fdlrshrd.nefec.org/elemK6/main.aspx

It is free, you just have to register. Despite what it says, you do not have to currently be teaching to register.

    To register:
    http://fdlrshrd.nefec.org/elemK6/register.aspx

Good luck! You can do it!
    Tim :)

Sorry for the delayed replies but thank you so much for your help TeacherGroupie and timsterino. I also found a university that offers workshops for this test. I think next time, I will be able to pass it. Thanks again. :)

Meeper22 I had that same problem. I was only 4 points away from passing and Ive tried so many study guides including that website above. I dont think half of the things on that test is in the study guides. Good luck next time!

What sometimes happens is that the material in the study guides does appear on the test - but that it surfaces in somewhat unexpected ways.

Again, sorry for the delayed replies. Bluesea, yeah, I've even noticed questions that the study book I have doesn't even cover it. Like one question I read was when a student makes a dissonant annoying sound with a harp, what is he doing?

It doesn't cover that anywhere. I got study guides, sample questions that are actually on this test to study from and I think I'll be fine. I didn't exactly study a lot like last time but I do study. Just not so many hours where I get headaches and I put on like a t.v. or music to help me relax.

Okay, let's play with that question, meeper.

When a student makes a dissonant annoying sound with a harp, what is likeliest to be going on?

Would it be possible for you to share some info with me regarding the K-6 test. I have the pre-k/primary (pre-k-grade 3), but now I have to pass the K-6, which has me extremely nervous.

XAM and REA both make very good prep guides. You can buy them on Amazon. I can check them out of my local library-perhaps you can too. You know when you go to take the test you sign a paper, vowing that you will never divulge the content of the test. I think I can not tell you about the question you have asked, but I can direct you to google dissonance! Maybe that will help.

If you feel reluctant to buy the books (my fave is REA), it is definitely cheaper than paying to retest.

I wish you the very best. I think if you relax and rely upon what you do know as opposed to focusing on what you do not know, you may do a little better. Best wishes.

    Congrats to meeper.
    Commiseration to love to teach.

May I suggest that you take the sample test in the book and then 10 questions at a time, read the descriptions about which answer is correct and why. Also, you might want to read the overview in the chapters concerning content and take some notes.

Additionally, you need to relax. If you go in to it with the pressure of the starvation of your family, you will be utilizing valuable energy that could be helping you pass the test. You can do it. Just prepare, prepare and then relax. If you are a person of prayer, you might consider praying for God to help you relax and remember what you have studied. Prayer has always assisted me. I wish you the very best success.

I live in Florida too and hold an inital certification. Im not taking the FTCE but I am taking the GACE (Georgia) because I'm relocating there. Another test taker suggested going through the standards. A former collague suggested reading fifth grade textbooks. FYI, Florida has posted new standards so I'm not sure what would be on the exam but I suggest going through both.

I know how you feel; Its very frustrating. I agree with Joyful, relaxing is something you and I both need to focus on. When you start to freak out step back and take a few deep breaths. Say, I can do this. I got this far and I can do this. There are over 3 million teachers in the US; and I would presume that a large majority of them began teaching during the time standardized tests were required. If they can do it, so can I, so can you!

If you are a person of faith. Please pray, just ask for clarity, relaxation, ask God to help you remember all that you have studied and realize that although its frustrating and your not where you want to be you'll get there. You have to believe in yourself.

    Take care and God bless~

Breathe, people! And when you read a question, please put more effort into finding things you DO know that it connects with than into cataloguing all the things you DON'T know.

What have you done to get ready for the test?

I can not overstate this. Get the study guide. Read the study guide. Take the practice test in the study guide. Read over the reasons why every answer is right/wrong. Don't just read over the ones you got wrong. Lots of vital info is included.

Then, really relax. Concentrate on the things you do know. That is so important.

Let us know how it turns out.

For math, there are lots of books that help with the skills. Try LearningExpress's Skill Builders books, notably Practical Math Success in 20 Minutes a Day (though there are other similar titles).

For language arts, is it content that has you concerned, or pedagogy?

I'll add that not every study guide for a specific test works for every test taker. Look around for a guide that suits your learning style and fits your needs while respecting the Competencies for the test (which you can find on the FLDOE Web site, though I don't recall just where).
