Last month I took the English subject matter test so that I can be licensed to teach English 5-8. I'm licensed elementary 1-6 now, but where my current position is 5th grade reading/writing in a middle school, I need the English license by the end of May in order to have my contract renewed. I was really stressing about the test because I would only have a few other opportunities to take it before the end of the school year. The results were posted tonight, though, and I passed! I'm so excited! I already went on the DOE website and applied for the license. I'm pretty sure I meet all of the other requirements, but I may have to wait a few more months to get a full semester of mentored teaching under my belt. That's no big deal, though. I'll still have the license WAY before May!

I'm definitely glad. I wasn't all that worried about it until a few days ago when I realized that today was the score release date. The only other test date options I would have had were November and March. I was starting to panic thinking that I could actually be without a job again next summer.

Congrats, I have taken so many of those certifcation tests and they are not easy. I have a permanent certifcation in Social Studies and English, so I guess that shows my age.

No, they're definitely not easy. I've taken 5 tests (communication & literacy, general curriculum, foundations of reading, elementary math, and English) and I've passed 4. I missed the elementary math test last March by 4 points. You need a 240 to pass and I got a 236. I think failing that one is what made me more nervous about this one. I passed the first three I took back in 2004/2005 so I think I got comfortable with the tests. The math one really woke me up, though.

I became a teacher when I learned I could have more time with my daughter, and spend less time commuting!

I left a corporate, downtown job and found peace of my closer to home. If I had not been fired from my secretarial job...I would not be where I am today.

Now, I think back to those days, and all the lives I have touched. My daughter is grown now. Yet..I enjoy the slower pace...the happy faces, and the excitement that learning brings.

I guess you could say, I am just a geeky nerd when it comes to education. When I was in L.A., Jeopardy, my favorite show, airs in the evening. I am between jobs, so now I get to see it at 3:30 p.m. here in Chicago.

Only a teacher can appreciate a show like that. well, that and Who Wants to be a Millionaire!

Knowledge is power. The library is a golden castle. The internet is my chocolate cake!!! I was so paranoid over this thing, I had the carpet guys put my computer on the balcony...I said, "I don't care what you do...don't unplug my internet!!!"

    So, in conclusion...

I teach because I love learning. And I love helping others enjoy the excitement learning can bring.

Do I get the job?? :woot:

    UPDATE

I just checked my account on the Dept. of Ed. website to see if my licensure status had changed from "Ready for Review" to "Processing" yet. When I applied for my elementary license it said "processing" for about a month before I got my license so I knew that was the next step, but when I checked it it already said "Licensed." :woot: I'm so excited!! It took me 2 months to get my elementary license (May 19-July 25, 2005) and this one only took 5 days! Hopefully I'll get it in the mail within the next week or so and can give it to my school. I know my principal will be happy that I have it already.

Can you print out that particular page and give it to your principal until the actual ones come in. Again, congrats!

Yeah, I can, but if it's already gone through I should have the actual license within about a week anyway.

Yep, my contract says May 30th. :) In order to be offered a contract for next year (assuming all else goes well) I needed to have my English 5-8 license. Right now I'm working on a waiver from the state, but they only offer waivers for one school year so my contract couldn't be renewed if I didn't have the license. Also, because so many people in the past haven't lived up to their end of the deal they started an incentive program this year. $1000 of my salary (and other people in the same boat as me) is being held until the end of the school year. If I have the license, I get a check for that amount, if not, I don't. Now I know I'll be getting a nice check at the end of June just in time for my honeymoon!

    with you there beth..

still checking mine for the sp. ed early childhood approval...
they said it takes 45 days.. and they won't do it a minute earlier! But hey, Pending, looks a lot better than nothing!!

and a whole lot better than...'rejected' or 'not qualified'

what they will do is send it back to me with a defiency statement...not a total reject..just a simple letter saying

    you need Math 101

or something like that! which means I know exactly what's needed to meet the requirements!
