Okay, a few of them. There is nothing sweet in the house right now unless I pick the raisins out of the trail mix. Usually I would just stick to small Gala apples when I can get to the grocery store, but my wonderful neighbor has parked so badly I cannot get out without risking hitting his car. While I have the time and can compile a shopping list, what are your go-to, fairly healthy snack suggestions? Savory and sweet are both acceptable. Trail mix and cheese get old after a while. I need a new nosh!
Lately I've been having a lot of sugar free jello and sugar free chocolate pudding. We also have lots of sugar free ice pops in the freezer. I also like the 100 calorie snacks-- choccolare covered pretzels, Keebler cookies.
Carrot sticks and hummus Poppers and fresh salsa Crackers and PB Pretzels...dip in mustard Grapes Granola bar Skinny cow ice cream sandwich Greek yogurt Sugar free jello
I love apples with peanut butter and hummus with pita chips. I don't like Greek yogurt, but I eat it because it's healthy. I usually put strawberries and honey in it and it tastes alright!
I'm snacking on strawberries and Jello Mousse Temptations pudding. I'm not eating grains right now, so I snack on: fruit, raw veggies, string cheese, a handful of nuts, yogurt.
/right now I'm snacking on roasted dry cranberries and roasted slivered almonds. Slightly coat the frying pan with non-stick spray, throw a handful in there and wait a few minutes. the cranberries get really crunchy, I love it! And I discovered it accidentally. I often make sugar free jello / pudding at home. My absolute favorite healthy snack: peanut butter sandwich without the jello. Instead I slice some strawberries and out a few leaves f fresh basil in there. You can also put a few slices of cucumbers / sliced apples or other fruit, but the basil makes it so good! And it's not too sweet.
A cup of Kashi GoLean (the original kind) takes a LONG time to eat, has 13g of protein, 10g of fiber, and is only 140 calories! I have it for breakfast every day.
Chobani Greek yogurt Sliced yellow and red peppers with ranch (not so healthy) Wasabi Soy roasted almonds (just found these and I am in LVE) Snow peas with spinach dip Blueberries and cottage cheese Laughing cow cheese wedge with flat pretzels The dips (ranch and spinach) are not so healthy but can be made low fat. I'm also going to be cutting out sugar so I'm scared to look at the sugar content in Chobani!
I've been really into cutting up a 90-100 calorie granola bar and mixing it with a 100 calorie bag of popcorn. Salty, sweet, and takes a long time to eat/seems like a lot of food for 200 calories. If I have a bunch of leftover calories (I use myfitnesspal) sometimes I'll even throw a 100 calorie cheez it pack in there as well. It's kind of my go-to tv watching snack. Sometimes I'll purposely make a low calorie dinner so I can have my snack (doing that tonight, actually!)
Frozen blueberries are yummy!!! We've had those. We also make a banana, yogurt popsicle (if you want the recipe let me know).
Kale chips - basically for a 2 dollar bunch of kale, you can make a LOT of chips by tossing them in olive oil, and topping of your choice. (i.e. salt, seasoning, dressing, etc.) Then just bake it in an oven for 20 minutes at 300 degrees. For sweet, I just go for oatmeal cookies or granola bars.
Dried fruit is good too. My favorite is dried persimmons & stores seem to have EVERY dried fruit there is, except for that. I had to resort to getting a food dehydrator & drying my own.
My favorite snacks lately are: 100 calorie pack of white cheddar popcorn watermelon cottage cheese (sometimes with pineapple) sugar free cherry jello with a little cool whip Fuji apple slices with a little cinnamon
Great thread! I just jotted down some of these ideas. I have decided to totally fast from chocolate for this school year (both for personal and health related issues, I was eating WAY too much, so I am giving it up ) One of my favorite snacks are those pretzel rods with a very thin slice of ham ( I get it shaved super thin at the deli) wrapped around and dipped in mustard. SO yummy! I also like cottage cheese with radishes or other crunchy veggies. I put a little salt and pepper in the cottage cheese and eat it like a dip with various veggies. For a sweet treat, I love frozen grapes.
This is a good topic! I am making a grocery list! Popcorn is pretty much my favorite Tea (sometimes I feel hungry but I'm just thirsty) Baby carrots Sliced fresh fruit in plain or vanilla yogurt Canned pumpkin mixed into vanilla yogurt with a little cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice, too (This is a fall one. Haven't had it in a year, but now it's sounding good!)
What about popcorn? Don't buy those yucky bags of it, just get a big bag of kernels. You pop it on the stove with olive oil. You can put on a little salt, but no butter needed. Yum! It's also good cold the next day for a snack. I eat plantain chips and yucca chips a lot. But I don't know if you can get those in the USA. My boyfriend works at a snack company so we keep a pretty good stock of stuff
We make pumpkin muffins.... 1 can pumpkin (the reg soup size) 1 spice cake 1/2 water (I use apple cider or juice if I have it) Mix and bake!!! Our fam loves it because it smells like fall!!! They are so YUMMY!!! (I'm not a big pumpkin fan and I like these)
You can even do without the liquid. Just the pumpkin & yellow/spice cake mix works too! The pumpkin is moist enough.
This is another favorite: homemade granola bites: - oats - rice krispies (optional) - peanut butter - your choice of any or many of the following: dried cranberries, raisins, nuts, coconut shavings, or anything else you might want. - variations: - honey, cocoa powder, cinnamon - all optional - add protein powder - a teaspoon of coconut oil - roll in protein powder, or cocoa powder, or very fine coconut shavings Mix these up, I like it best when I make little balls out of them. One put a fresh blueberry inside each ball, it was so good. Place them in the fridge for at least a few hours, overnight is better. They're healthy, and because home made, you know exactly what's in them. Downside: can't do it if you're allergic to peanuts. The peanut butter holds it all together, so it's pretty important.
I made that all the time last fall...SO good, seriously, ridiculously better than "real" cupcakes! You can also use low fat cream cheese mixed with a little pumpkin and cinnamon/nutmeg/pumpkin pie spice to make icing if you want for cupcakes, or skip the icing and eat them as muffins. Both are delicious!
At this moment, I'm seriously addicted to the GoLean bars for breakfast. They are filling and so tasty. The best part is that Rockhubby is allergic to them so they're all MINEMINEMINE.
Nope... I've always you used the half cup of liquid. I make them and eat them for bfast!! A nice yummy fall treat. Sometimes I put a little cream cheese on mine. I know my MIL has made different cakes with it as well.
I've adapted Lauren's favourite banana-peanut butter smoothie to make it lower fat: -1 cup unsweetened almond milk -1/2 a frozen banana -1-1/2 tablespoons PB2 (powdered peanut butter--lower in fat) or 1 tablespoon peanut butter
I made kale chips for the first time today and they were surprisingly yummy. Hubs and I polished off the whole bunch of kale in one sitting, and neither of us are particularly fond of kale. We seriously couldn't believe how yummy it was. I baked mine for 10 minutes at 350, tossed half the batch with olive oil, vinegar and salt, and the other half with olive oil and garlic powder. Next time I'm going to try olive oil, and a little bit of salt, vinegar and garlic powder.
Do you cut up the kale into bite size pieces? I'm not picturing this too well. I love apple slices with peanut butter. They taste like caramel to me. And Yoplait Lite really satisfies me.
I love veggies and dip. I make my own by mixing a container of low fat cottage cheese with light sour cream (equal amounts) and an envelope of Hidden Valley Ranch dip mix. Only way I will eat cottage cheese! I also grab the individual snack packs sometimes, or cheddar or mozzarella cheese cubes, baby bella cheese mini's, yogurt, jello, or pudding cup. I like to mix low fat vanilla yogurt with frozen berries. It's almost as good as ice cream
I like nuts and seeds. My favorites are pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, and cashews. Air-popped popcorn is a favorite, too. I would love to eat dried fruit, but I'm allergic to sulfates. They're used to preserve most dried fruits and some dried veggies. Sometimes I find dried apple chips without sulfates. I love dried peas, corn, and soybeans. Sometimes I find carrot, beet, and sweet potato chips.
One of my favorite snacks since childhood is peanut butter/vanilla wafer sandwiches (PB between two vanilla wafers). I usually make about 8-10 of these when I want to snack on them. Low on sugar, but about not so great on calories. My sons told me about a mix their mom makes that has become a new favorite of mine. Her version contained grapes and slices of banana and apples in vanilla yogurt. Grapes are too rough on my system, so I sub raisins for them. You can also mix in pineapple, peaches, blueberries or any other fruit you like.
Do you like hummus? If you have a food processor it's so easy to make your own and it tastes SO MUCH better. Baba ghanouj is just as easy - just sub out the chickpeas for roasted eggplant. mmmm.
Ima Teacher, if you're anywhere near a Trader Joe's, you should be able to find unsulfured dried apricots by the pound; they're not nearly as pretty as the sulfured ones, but they taste terrific.
I'm 50 miles from a Trader Joe's. Even when I'm in that town, I'm usually on the other side of the town from the store. I've never been to it since it changed names. I used to go there sometimes when it was Wild Oats. I should make it a point to stop by there next time I'm in town.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, it has become one of my new favorite snacks! Sometimes I double it for a quick breakfast. YUM!
