Today I read the book Owl Babies to my preschoolers. If you don't know this story, here is a quick synopsis: babies wake up, mom is gone, babies are sad, mom comes home, all are happy, the end. When I got to the page where the little owl says, " I want my mom!" I happened to look down, and noticed the little girl at my feet had 2 tears running down her checks. I have never had tears before while reading this story, but there is a first time for everything!
No, she didn't say anything, and I didn't want to call attention to her. By the time the mother owl came back, she was fine. So funny, I don't think I ever had a child cry like that because of a book. I guess she is a sensitive soul...
I still cry a bit when I read The Velveteen Rabbit, and I'm a lot older than 4 years. It's a shame, because I would love to read it to my kids, but I would definitely tear up.
My kids always laugh at "I want my mommy" probably because I used a whiny sing-song voice. I'm sorry it made her sad. That has to be one of my favorite stories.
Great book! We make "Bill" puppets on Popsicle sticks so they can all go around saying "I want my mommy!"
That would totally have been my daughter. She even cried when she saw a commercial for Alice in Wonderland when Alice fell in the hole. She really, truly just wants everyone to be okay and together. She was also the baby that cried when she heard another one crying. I think it's just a super heightened dose of sympathy. God gives some of us extra sweet hearts for good reasons.
