I signed up to teach summer school (a transition program to middle school) because I wanted some extra $$ for the summer and I didn't want to be bored. I have to say that I LOVE it. My school is very disorganized so it was confusing at first because they did not give us any direction about what to do. But I have a sped coteacher and tiny classes (16 kids). There is no pressure of testing and we can basically teach whatever we want, do games, etc. The behavior is really easy to manage because the kids are on their best behavior since it's summer. It reminds me why I got into teaching :)

My first day of the summer program was yesterday, and it was just delightful. You basically hit all the reasons. I have 3 hours of teaching time with them... I'm doing a read-aloud of "The Wishing Spell" by Chris Colfer to tie in some literacy standards, but otherwise we're just going to be looking at different number systems and designing a factory subsystem.

Exactly. It is so nice to teach/do whatever you want. The kids are also SO cute. It almost makes me feel bad that I'm leaving my school this year. The behavior has been so good. I know it's just because all the kids are new (last year's kids were apparently great too) but it is still nice teaching with basically no behavior problems.

We stopped having summer school a few years ago - I guess it's all about the money, since we don't get ADA for the kids in the summer. The kids could really benefit though we have kids who need to be in a structured environment at least for part of the day, otherwise they'll just end up in juvenile hall.
And at one point we at least had summer school for seniors who were shy of 10 credits, so they could still walk at graduation and then earn those missing credits in the summer. For the past couple of years that stopped as well.

Summer school can be fun, and a nice extra paycheck, although I wouldn't want to tie myself down for 5 weeks. I did that during the first year and my summer became so hectic and busy, I wasn't really mentally recharged for the new year.

This is how I feel, as well. I had to do an unpaid practicum for the month of June this summer in order to earn my reading specialist certification. I feel like I have missed out on a summer. I have 1.5 weeks left before I unofficially return to work and 2.5 before I officially return, and I don't feel nearly as refreshed and ready as I usually do. Unless I find myself having difficulty paying bills, I don't foresee myself ever offering to teach summer school.

Well summers schools are great and help you some extra $. I am a language teacher and often call for Vocational Courses. Parents know the importance of knowing another language so they enroll their children's to the summer camps where children's learn some language basics and enjoys spending time with friends. Korean is Difficult to learn but it provide lot of opportunities in the career so as a language teacher It helps me earn some money.

I'm in the middle of my shift of teaching summer school. It's only 9 days. That said, it's 7th graders taking algebra 1 over the summer to take 8th grade geo. I could never teach this grade full time....it truly makes me appreciate my high schoolers so much more.
