Hi! Fellow teachers and teachers to be!!!

I just wanted to get some opinions on a classroom that I was in today. I was in this classroom where the teacher was in the building for the day. The team was meeting to plan the rest of their year and start looking forward to next year. Anyway, I got there early enough that I was able to talk with the classroom teacher. She gave me the lowdown on a couple of students. She told me about this little girl who functions at a kindergarten level (the class was 2nd grade) and said that I would need to help her a lot. She wasn't in class for the morning and there was another teacher in the room for the math period. Then during science, as I am standing at the front of the room putting definitions on the board, starts yelling for me to come over there and help her. So what I did was instead of going over and helping her write each definition, I waited until I had put all the definitions on the overhead and I just gave her a copy of the definitions to copy from. Do you think that was okay or should I have went over after each definition and wrote them for her?

I think you were fine. It will teach her a little bit of self-reliance.

It sounds like something I would do.

    Thanks for the support

I have been subbing for a number of years. I just get really anxious when teachers make those kinds of statements to me. I just don't want the kid coming in tomorrow and telling the teacher that I would not help her at all. I always get nervous when I get notes like that because I am not sure how much help is too much or not enough!

I've been in that situation many times, and I do the same as you. I will give that student assistance after I have the rest of the class started. I think you were fine.

I agree with the others that you were fine. I would have done the same thing in your shoes.

The kid got her assignments finished, so the teacher will be able to tell that she got some help. It just might not have been the kind of help she was used to.
