Hi everyone! I JUST got hired as the Media Specialist at an elementary school. The person I am replacing is retiring and very well respected. A teacher from the school applied for the position but did not have any library experience. I am nervous that the teachers are not going to accept me because of this. Any advice to a newbie?

    :celebrate: Congrats!

I guess the only advice that I have is to maybe ask the teachers what worked with the old media specialist and for any suggestions on how you could improve on what the old one did.

Help to support the teachers anyway that you can and update that book displays to build interest for the students.

    YAY! :)

I'm not trying to nitpick, but I would be sure to choose words carefully during this transition. Whether you meet with the teachers individually, at a faculty meeting, or through emails, I wouldn't ask, "How can I improve on what Ms. Soandso did?" but instead ask how you can best serve the teachers and students and community. The former librarian will surely have friends remaining at the school, or at least colleagues who respect her, so just be aware how certain statements could be taken. Also, I think many teachers would actually be more likely to provide you with helpful feedback if they don't feel as though they are essentially criticizing how the retired library media specialist managed the program...as silly as I know that sounds.

This is what you spent all that hard work and time preparing for, so just do your thing! Have fun and let us know if we can help with anything.

    Happy dance on your behalf!

If you want to incorporate the opinions and thoughts of your new faculty, why not create a questionnaire asking for their feedback? That way they can chime in with what has already worked, what could stand improvement and what they want to see the library become.
