    Hey Everyone!

Please send positive thoughts my way. Today I saw a new listing for a school in the area (not my first pick, but very close to home) that was hiring for two different grades. I faxed them my information and a minute later, the principal called! She said that she was VERY interested by my letter and wanted to meet with me as soon as possible. She said not to speak to anyone else or go anywhere else that she thinks she has a position for me!

She sounded like the job is mine as long as I don't mess this up. I've been desperately searching for a job and panicked when I noticed that next week will be August.

I'm soooooo excited!! I hope this goes really well and that something doesn't go wrong.

    I'll keep everyone posted!

I GOT THE JOB!!!!!! But........ I have to finish paperwork with the county so that I can properly be hired and sign a contract. PLUS, the principal doesn't know where she's going to put me yet! She said that it would be in either 1st, 3rd, or 5th, but that she thinks I will be best in 5th. I had wanted the 1st grade position, but the 5th grade is starting to grow on me. It's a 1 year position though.

I'M TERRIFIED!!!!!! I don't know what grade I'm in so I don't know my classroom so I can't start preparing anything yet! I'm excited though. New teacher orientation starts the 3rd already so everything is happening SO QUICKLY!

If anyone is a non-education major who went into a classroom without prior experience I'd really like to know how you did. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I have my degree in Psychology and have never taken any education classes and the closest thing to experience tutoring!

Help!! :) :) :) :) I really hope that by the end of this week, I know my grade and can get started.

Yay Kris!! Good for you! I'm a middle school teacher, but subbed in 5th last week. It wasn't too bad!

I was not an education major, no one in my cohort was. I'm a social science major and we had several liberal arts majors. I haven't been hired yet, but people I've talked to from my program seem to do well.

Congratulations Kris. I have my third interview on Thursday I am so nervous, but God keeps telling me that I will get this job. I like everything about this school. The school is only two minutes away from me. The principal is soo sweet (she graduated from the same college so that hopefully will be a plus) and the environment is beautiful. PLEAS PRAY FOR ME :)

    Mrsammieb,

That would be great!!! What I need most is info! What do you do on the first day of school? What has worked for you for as a behavioral/discipline plan? Are they too old for incentive charts and prize boxes? I don't want to be baby-ish. What about reading aloud, is that grade appropriate? Any and all help and advice is very welcome.

    Thank you so much!

Fifth grade should be a great fit for a non-ed major. I know most principals won't put a first-year teacher, period, in a first grade class because of the emphasis on beginning reading and all those technicalities. I student taught in fifth grade, though, and thought it was great. The student are more independent, but not quite to the "know-it-all" stage they hit in a year or two!! :-D
