I had my final interview today and was offered a job!! I will be the new reading/writing teacher for grades 1-5. I don't get my own classroom, but the principal told me I'm next up at bat if a teacher leaves (which he thinks a 3rd grade teacher will be). Since it's a charter school, the people who fund it send all the new teacher to a week long orientation in Grand Rapids, MI. I'm really excited about all this. Now I need to get started on my planning.
Sounds like a fun job! Reading is my favorite subject, and you will have such a huge impact on their academic career. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! 1st to 5th is a WIDE range!! Is it National Heritage Academies you are working for? I'm on the other side of MI, or I'd recommend some stuff for you to do on your down-time. GR is a fairly large city.
Thanks everyone, I'm very excited about starting my first "real" teaching job. And it's pretty cool that I get a free trip out of it. I've never been to Michigan before so it'll be a new experience (especially me traveling alone!) Giraffe326: Yes, National Heritage Academies is the company that funds the school. Please don't tell me you've heard bad things about it?!?
No, just coming from MI, I knew they are based in Grand Rapids. If I could have found an open position in my area, I'd have done it in a heart beat! Unfortunately, all the open positions were in the city of Detroit. Which is a LOOONNNNGGGG rush hour commute, and I could not afford to live in a safe area.
Yeah I know what you mean. I too can't afford to live in the best neighborhood but the apartment is in a nice area and I will have a 40 minute commute to school but hey you gotta do what you gotta do!
I commute 40 minutes everyday and I love it in the morning. It is peaceful and my prayertime. It also gives me a chance to run through things in my head before getting to school. After school, the commute is my down time. I usually stay 1 - 1 1/2 hours after school to work, so I like to unwind a bit on my way home, becuase once I'm there I have to start laundry, cooking dinner, etc. The only negative is the gas $$.
Yeah, the gas sux. I'm faced with another long commute (40-45mins) this year, but that's ok, better than unemployment:haha: . Fortunately, the countryside is beautiful, esp in the fall. And, it goes remarkably fast. Insert IPOD, attach sunglasses and go.
I will have a 45 minute commute too, but that is AFTER I move 5 states away! People are moving to NC so fast, you can't find a decent apartment!
