Today is my first day. I am a little excited, but it's more dread...

Am I the only one? I don't like how the kids' nervousness rubs off on me. I don't like talking about rules. I don't like teaching procedures. All those school supplies are overwhelming. I don't like not having a routine the first few days, and so on. It's worse this year because I switched schools and grade.

I also hate feeling like I will fall asleep on the commute home

I am in a similar boat with switching schools & Grades!

Let us know how your 3rd graders were!!! :) Is it a full day on day one for your kids of a 1/2 day?

    Good luck!!

Agreed. I love when we start reading groups because it is such a set routine. It is great for me, and for the kids, because we all know what's coming next! And I get really bored teaching rules and routines, but I do realize how important they are.

I love the first day! Excitement is in the air, everyone is happy to see each other, everything is clean and shiny. I dive right in the first day (my students know what is expected), so no one has time to get bored.

Hope your first day goes well, Pisces!

I love the beginning of school. Shiny hopeful faces, newly sharpened pencils, a 'clean slate', new opportunities and possibilities...and new school shoes!!:D

Remember the Tom Hanks line in You've Got Mail about a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils? :D

I think what I like is the promise of another year, another chance to do great things. It is tiresome teaching rules and procedures, but I realize even more now just how important those things are because my kids need so much training, I forgot how much they need in the beginning!

I do like the excitement and the promise and all that jazz, but I do find that every year I kind of forget what it feels like to teach. It almost feels like I'm getting up there for the first time every year.

It's kind of "just like riding a bike" in that it comes back to me quickly, but beforehand there is always some nervousness. When I think about getting up in front of students again, I find it hard to imagine exactly what it feels like, which encourages some anxiety.

I usually dread it - new kids when I want MY bambini back, rules, procedures, usually eleventy hundred questions...

And then I get in there and it's all great! Except for the pouts about no pencils. They'll get over it soon enough :)

I play a little game with the rules... it makes it more interesting. I make them yell it, whisper it, laugh it, cry it, etc...

Took a page right out of your book!

I like the first day, but I don't like the feeling of not having a routine yet. I always feel a bit of sorrow in that by the end of the year, we were just a greased wheel. It always feels so overwhelming to get this year's kids where last year's were...

Yeah, this! I couldn't have said it better myself. I have a great class this year, but it's still hard reteaching the routine/procedures last year's kids already knew.

    My favorite!!

"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you a bouquet of newly-sharpened pencils if I knew your name and address. On the other hand, this not knowing has its charms."
