I was in the valley today visiting my mom and glad I had my cell phone because got a call from a school district that has a K opening offering me a long term sub position in Kindergarten! It is the district I like and the school I wanted, too! And the I get to set up the class next Thursday and Friday and then start teaching Monday!
They use the same curriculum I used the last two years! He said he will interview for the position on the 14th but I will have a leg up on everyone. He said if the principle likes me, I will get the permanent position! I can't believe it! When he told me last week that over 70 applicants applied within the first 20 minutes my heart sank. Wow! I still can't believe it. I'm so happy! :)

So, you will for sure be the long term sub until the interviews for the perm position are completed?

    Wow congrats! Sounds great!

That news about 70 applicants in the first 20 minutes really worries me. I have heard some rumblings about some openings in the district I sub for that should be posted in the not too distant future. I certainly can't apply for anything that is posted while I'm subbing during the day. Plus I'm a brand new teacher...

congrats!!! when i went to my interview, the principal told me at the end "okay, well we have a lot of other applicants". total buzzkill since not a single district in sacramento county was hiring. and i got the job! you never know! i know that i'm really not "supposed" to be on this forum, but i love reading everyone's stories so much, especially ones like this :)

Thanks. When I filled out paperwork, the credential analyst said "he likes to hire long term subs then put them in permanently, thats how he does it" Its weird because I set up on the 10th and 11th, then there is the weekend and I start teaching the 14th and that is when they are interviewing for the position permanently!
He told me when I interviewed a few weeks ago that he tells his long term subs "the job is yours to lose" Inotherwords, it's your job unless they don't like you.

Congratulations!! How exciting! Have fun with your new room. So do you have to interview again for the job or are they using your other interview and your experience?

Congrats, However, I'm a little confused. You are basically going in, setting up for them and then there are going to be interviews for the position. So in essence you could set the whole class up work a week as a sub and that's it? I'm not so sure that this is a great thing. :sorry:

Yeah, it does sound weird. But he likes to hire people as a long term sub and then keep them as permanent if he likes what he sees. Thats just the way they do it. He said the job is mine basically. Unless something goes wrong. I'm going to look at it as though I am there to stay. That's all I can do.

There's just no way you would be asked to set up the classroom if they didn't think they were going to be able to keep you long term.

I agree! I started thinking about it and how rude it would be to have a teacher spend 2 days setting up a classroom only to hire someone else the next day. I think I'm in!

Thanks again everyone. And did I mention? This elem. school still has class size reduction (unbelievable!) so that means I will have a max. of 20 kindergartners, with an average of 17! WOW.
The past two years I had a max. of 32 with an average of 29! The things I will be able to do with a smaller class! :)

Update: the principal called me yesterday and apologized for not calling me back the day before but never checked her voice mails. She said of course I could come in and set up earlier than next Thursday. She said she just hired a 2nd grade teacher as well and shes coming in Tues at 9:00 so I am going to also, and she will introduce us around, give us a tour, and we can start bringing our stuff in and setting up even tho all desks, etc. wont be there until Thurs. I will be one of 6 Kindergarten teachers. Wow! I'm so excited.

How exciting!! :) Have you bought "stuff" for your classroom? Actually how does that work when you are a LTS, although I know you'll get the permanent position soon?
