I interviewed last Monday-June 26th-and finally got a call back this Thursday. The first call I got was regarding some additional information they needed for my application, but within 30 minutes I got offered a third grade position at a school that is two blocks from my house.
The school is about as inner city as you can get in such a small town-we have several elementary schools, and this one is the one that "good parents" don't want their children to have to go to. It is so sad. I was SHOCKED that they hired a first year teacher to teach third grade (end-of-grade testing year) but I am so excited. I know it is going to be a big challenge.
Anyways, just had to share that I finally got a job! Yeah!

    HI

    Congrats.

I think more and more places are looking at the newbies out there. My new job (YEAHHHHH!!!) kind of liked it that I was new with a varied background, LOL.

As a first year- you've learned all the latest research, the best strategies-- and you haven't had time to learn bad habits, LOL.

Great news! My advice is to find a mentor teacher and be open to new ideas. That's the beauty of teaching... how much we can learn from others while we teach.

Doesn't that feel so good? It makes you feel wanted, and that fuels the fire to be fabulous. You should write a journal entry about how good you feel. Then on days when you are frustrated about how things are going, you can remind yourself what a wonderful feeling getting this job was to you! Congrats!

Read "The First Few Days of School" by Harry and Rosemary Wong
look for books that encourage learning centers
look for other books that help you organize your classroom
If you have students with autistic spectrum disorders, please don't hesitate to ask me questions. I'm not an expert, but I have extensive experience working with this population.
I don't know of any suggestions for a general education classroom except look for a mentor as soon as possible. I would look all over the internet if you can, especially a person who is familiar with third grade.

    I hope these suggestions help.

Great news, year#1! Being close to home is such a comfort. You can pop in when you forget something, zip home before a meeting, etc. These kids will benefit from your enthusiasm. Be very firm yet very kind.
