Hi you guys, this is a follow up from a previous post. I am hired to teach ESL online to kids in China. The process was long and rigorous, but I made it through.
I went through 3 interviews and passed each. I am a contract teacher with the company and will be earning 18$/hr. My income may vary from month to month because I have to earn bookings to teach. I am happy because this will be a great part time career!

    Hi,
It is best to do it on the computer instead of the APP. Once you fill out the application, I think that they will send an email stating that you are a fit for the company and to schedule a interview.

Any chance you could do local tutoring? $18 taxable is going to be less than cash off the books tutoring (I get $70 per hour off books). Plus I'm just not willing to wake up before 7 am school days, 9 am summer days for that pay. I'm really not willing to work for $18 per hour under any conditions truthfully.

Uh huh. And only you know if that's worth it for you. Plus the off hours. Not worth it for me. I'd rather sleep in the extra few hours during the school year, more hours or sit my butt on the beach on the summer. And make more than four times that amt tutoring

But you can make your own hours. I thought the same thing until I researched and found out you do not have to teach during the peak hours. That's only if you want to make more money. I will be teaching part time so only certain days I will get up that early. Then during the summer months you will be able to teach later instead of in the mornings because many Chinese students will be out for summer vacation. I will also work full time over the weekends

Congratulations! I know you were hoping for extra income, so I hope you enjoy this and it works out for you financially! :)

I don't think $70 an hour is a normal tutoring rate in most areas of the country. I know you're in a very high COL area. It would not be a typical rate in my area (northern CA, not Bay Area), especially for elementary. Isn't the OP in Georgia? I imagine the rate there would be lower than it is where I live, and therefore significantly below the NJ rate.

Exactly. Here in GA, the typical rate is maybe 25 to 30

I see a few benefits to this. Something extra to put on your resume and a few extra bucks along the way. Try to save a good portion of that extra money.

Be really careful about filing a W9 -- I used to have to do this for part-time gigs and always ended up owing. You have to be good about tracking your expenses which you should be able to write off.

With this situation you are considered an independent contractor and should keep records of all expenses to write off, otherwise you will be taxed heavily and really not make much. Anything you buy for this job, office supplies, computer software, webcam, even clothes because you need to be on camera, you could deduct. Of course you should consult a tax preparer to make sure you do it right and that you include everything.

I'm interested to see what you think! In my area there is simply no market for elementary tutoring. I would love to be able to tutor on the side! The only way you can really get hired as a tutor in my area if you're doing something like SAT prep or high school math. Even then, those people are making maybe $20-25 an hour, and the plus side of something like this is that you're not putting in any time preparing the lessons. The hours wouldn't bother me at all in the summer, as I'm up half the night anyway when I'm allowed to be on my "natural" sleep schedule...I don't think I could maintain that during the school year though. I considered applying, but my laptop died and so far I've been okay with using my i pad hooked up to a keyboard at home. I'd have to buy a laptop basically just to do the job, and of course that would negate a lot of my profits!

You should give it a try. You will need a laptop because the virtual classrooms does not work on Ipads or tablets just yet. It's worth it in the end.

Congratulations on landing this job, TeacherCuriousExplore!
About how many hours did each of these 3 interviews require?
Did you need to use Skype for these interviews?
I'm interested to know how VIPKID works because I know some substitute teachers who are fully credentialed in ESL and might enjoy teaching online classes.

Hi, sorry for the late reply. The first interview is very short. During this part of the interview you will be interviewed by someone in china. It only lasts for 10 maybe 15 mins. The last 2 interviews lasts for only 25 mintues. You will be interviewed by someone in America or an American living over seas that is a long time teacher for the company. For all 3 interviews, you will be given a mock powerpoint to study from and that is also the same powerpoint that will be used in the classroom. All of the interviews are done online in the VIPKID portal. Once you fill out and application, you will be inside the portal where the interview is conducted. An email with steps on everything will be sent right away. My advice is to watch tons of youtube videos, wear a orange shirt, use TPR(Total Physical Response), and have tons of energy.

    An orange shirt?

One would hope they also look for candidates who know content, have an impeccable command of English, are available at off-hours, and who convey an interest in ELL .

Good luck to you and your students.

If anyone is wondering about the suggestion to wear an orange shirt if possible, I heard that VIPKID's company color (or one of its major company colors) is orange and that their staff shirts are an orange color.

I was reading a woman's blog recently and she detailed her experience with this. I did notice in one picture she was wearing an orange shirt!! Funny! She said she typically works from 3am-9am (her time) because of the time difference. She doesn't have another job so it's fine for her. She did say it was a lot of fun and she has a lot of props (puppets, cat ears, tiaras, etc) to teach with which is why she THINKS the parents are choosing her.

I'd maybe try out for this one if the hours weren't so wacky...I know, because it's in China.

I choose my work hours to be 6:30 am on the weekdays before work. The classes are only 25 minutes and I am able to leave for work by 7 and make it on time. I then open up from 7 am-12 am during the weekends. I have one 12 hour break in between. The morning hours are 7 am-9:30 am and night hours are usually from 9:00 pm- 12:00 am. If I am up for it I sometimes work from 9:00 pm-4 am

That is not a deal breaker for hiring. The orange shirt is just added points to the hiring process.

Sounds like a good opportunity that will also look good on your resume. You will be able to say you've done some creative things with educational technology.

Have you tried this schedule yet?
Are you an early morning person? I wake up only a half hour before leaving my driveway for work. And then my tutoring is off the books after school and pays more than 4 times what this does per hour...off the books. Have you looked at what you'll net after taxes?
