Congrats! I became a citizen last year at about this time. The swearing in ceremony was interesting. I think there were people from about 40 different countries. We each stood as our country was called.

My son (age 9) told me last week it was a good thing he was already a citizen because when he took the test at school just for fun he failed.

Don't forget your camera on Friday, and again, congrats!

Yay! Congrats! I remember going to my mom's oath when she finally became a citizen (I was 9). I remember how neat it all was. :)

Congrats! Just curious...where are you originally from? How long did it take you to become a citizen. It seems like it took my friend's husband a very long time. They couldn't wait!

We were in Boston last summer when a large group of people came out of a building into a waiting crowd and they were waving US flags and people were taking pictures and giving flower bouquets and smiling ear to ear. We found out it was after the citizenship ceremony and the people were so happy it made me cry.

    The New Colossus

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
    With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

IrishDave, my husband came here not to escape anything, but to marry me. He became a citizen in 1976--so it was a big celebration due to the date.

    Congratulations!

One of my close friends went through the process a few years ago. He's from Guelph, Ontario, Canada. It took a while for him to get it. But boy he was happy when it happen.

How long did the process take for you?

Congratulations in advance, TeachOnTheBeach! Congratulations after the fact, MsMar.

Dave, thanks tremendously for posting "The New Colossus." It always makes me tear up - sometimes on account of the failures but so much more for such grand potential!
