All of the area school districts are closed here (the five county Philadelphia area) today and all of the colleges announced yesterday that they were closing Monday and Tuesday. (Where were these colleges when I went?? Whenever we would get a boatload of snow, they would all stay open and proudly announce to the media, "We haven't closed for snow since 1849." And if we didn't make an effort to get to class, our grade would take a hit. Sometimes, WE would show up and the professor wouldn't then we would get told, "Oh well, glad you guys made it in, but there's no class today. Good luck getting home!")

Watch the radar on PIX...the really BIG winds correspond with different bands...kind of cool and kind of scary when you see what's still coming.

    Stay safe!

Not much here do far. It looks eerie out, but nothing much beyond rain and some wind. I think we have a few hours more of calm.

We are on the outer edge of all the snow. We have had gusty wind and cold, slushy rain all day. We often get rain and wind from hurricanes, but this is way different.

    Stay safe, everyone!

Here in Nova Scotia, we were told to expect rain and some strong wind gusts overnight through Thursday morning, both of which have started. I was hoping to get out to the beach to see the waves early this evening, but it didn't happen.

The Bounty, the ship that sank, was actually built in Lunenburg - very close to where I live. I was able to see it when it was in port this summer. I just heard that they found one of the two missing crew members. She's alive, but unresponsive. Prayers that they find the Captain alive as well.

Thinking of all who are affected. Stay safe.

The wires at the end of my driveway are sparking a LOT. As soon as we can get through to LIPA, I fully expect that they'll just shut off the power.

Mike, I had a lot of fun in Quogue back in the day. I hope they get through OK.

Omigod, from what my brother's family was told (they have a summer house there), it was already flooding last night.

Yeah... this could be a case of terminal stupidity.

They're in my prayers, as is everyone else in harm's way.

I have never, in my whole life, seen a storm like this one!

That's saying something, Alice. I hope everyone stays safe; I've been pretty well glued to CNN since I got home from work.

The wind has really picked up here in the last hour. The chairs and potted plants are inside and the glass patio table, which we don't have a space for inside, is upside down on the deck.

It's no longer the hurricane that's battering NYC and LI; it's the nor'easter that's wrapped around it.

We're still looking at gusts of between 70 and 90 mph.

Lower Manhattan power has been taken offline so nothing underground can be flooded and short-circuited. My brother in Greenwich Village (they boarded up the Fire Island house last month) lost power about a half hour ago. At least I know he'll text me if anything happens, but it's mostly a wait-and-see kind of night.

We last heard from my aunt about 6 hours ago. I'm not sure where in Manhattan she is, so the pictures coming out are doing nothing to alleviate my worries.

Neighbor has his house for sale...a big pine in his yard fell across the street, pulling on some wires which bent the electrical pole between me and next door. And we still have power.

I'm concerned about friends in Cape May. They were okay earlier today, but that was before it really hit. They're rescuing people from rooftops in the town where I grew up.

My parents had left their house and then went back. They are now (well about an hour and a half ago) on higher ground again. All of a sudden the water came flowing down the street. The house is surrounded by a bit higher than waist deep water and it is pouring into the basement like a waterfall. My Dad's car is completely full of water and will soon be under water.

My Aunt and Uncle came to rescue them right before all the roads closed. My other Aunt and Uncle have the fire department at their house because their carbon monoxide detecter began going off.

I'm still a bit annoyed that they went back to the house in the first place. But I'm really happy they are safe. Apparently, most of the neighbors who had left went back earlier this afternoon before high tide so I'm sure there are a lot of stranded people in Wantagh right now ... =/

It seems like NYC and NJ got the worst of it. My neighborhood seems ok. No power loss although some in my town are without power. My MIL and Mom lost power last night. Going to work this morning so hope the roads are clear of any debris.

    We were incredibly lucky.

As far as I can tell this early, we didn't lose a thing. We never lost power, though some friends did. We lost a couple of small branches from the back yard tree-- that's it.

We'll do a real inventory when it's light out. But God bless whoever built this house.

My only tiny, inconsequential complaint is that I'm too old to sleep on a concrete floor.

There's still a high wind advisory until 3 pm-- they're warning of gusts up to 50 mph.

So I think we're indoors again today for the most part.

And we need to have someone look at that wire that was arcing last night; we tried for about an hour but couldn't get through to the non-emergency number.

I'm most concerned now about my siblings. I just sent out an email, but most of them are in the flood/ evacuation zones. I'm not sure who has power.

LIPA is reporting over 900,000 customers without power.

As I said, we were amazingly lucky.

I never really thought I would ever be a part of a hurricane in NE Ohio, but here we are! Schools all across the area are closed today, businesses closed, and parts of the interstate by Lake Erie are closed due to 20+foot waves that are crashing onto the road. Local rivers are flooded, and thousands are without power.
This experience has given me a whole new perspective of the power of a hurricane.

Started a new day in PA. We still have power and feel very lucky. DS was home from college and was able to stay due to his college canceling classes. We will take him back tonight. I've been off school for 2 days. Prayers to all who aren't as lucky today.

Car door handle knocked off my Jeep, a few lost roof shingles. That tree that fell a few doors down pulled the wires at my house and next door really taught...looks like they could snap and telephone pole holding them up is listing and snapped off at top. Didn't lose power, but they'll cut it off to do the repairs. What a mess.

The news and the pictures are heartbreaking.

I'm worried about so many of the teachers and kids at school-- the ones in Long Beach and Point Lookout and Amityville and Massapequa and Freeport and the north shore-- the news is bound to be devastating.

    Please continue to do so.

It's going to take a long time for this part of the country to recover.

I told the kids that if it were safe to walk to church, we would have been there already.
