Maybe this could be merged with the other hurricane thread.

We're closed tomorrow. Will get a call about Tuesday on Monday night even though I can't see how we could possibly be open. I mean we are on a peninsula.

I just talked to my parents and they are finishing up the prep work. They have to leave. They are south of Merrick Rd. and are in a mandatory evacuation zone.

No school for Monday and Tuesday... However, they said there might be a change of plans for Tuesday. We shall see. I just hope we do not lose power.

In the 28 years that we have lived in Northern NJ, we would only lost power for a few hours. However, last October we were out for 5 days. We also lost power for 2 days in June for a microburst that my town had. We have never had that before.

So, we are hoping for the best for everyone! STAY SAFE!!!!

I'm in Northern NJ- hubby and I spent the day shopping and putting away stuff around the house to stay safe, did some laundry, going to fill up the bathtub later on (for household needs). Nothing much going on, but we already have Monday and Tuesday cancelled.

Stay safe to all the teachers who are in the area!!!

I think most NJ schools will be closed for two days- I heard Christie saying he was thinking of making it mandatory.

Last year my school was closed for 4 days and was open for half a day that Friday- we just had gotten power back and parents were freaking out (private school).

    So far, so good.

THe outer bands are due to arrive within an hour or two.

High tide on the South Shore is anywhere from about 6 am till 11. That's when it could start to get ugly.

We are at the Jersey shore, right across from Seaside Park. We are four blocks in from the bay and for the moment riding it out here, but we are packed and ready to leave at any time. Our schools are closed today and tomorrow, at least.

    Stay safe, everyone.

Well, I'm at school. We don't close so we all had to get in today. I hope I can get home. I will be going in tomorrow unless they close the roads and tell me I can't pass through. At home we should be ok since we have a generator but I'm less concerned with the power and more concerned with flooding.

I decided to go home to my parents this weekend instead of staying at my Northern NJ apartment alone. Now it looks like it's going to be a direct hit right where my parents are. The town next to us was already evacuated. Hope this decision wasn't a terrible one, though I guess it's better than being alone.

I also hope they close school tomorrow, because I can't imagine driving up north.

Thank goodness you'll be there then-- I imagine your parents will need your help.

My sister's shoulder surgery got cancelled (again)-- it was supposed to be today. The silver-bordering-on-gold lining is that, as a result, she's with mom. Mom is 84 and very able minded and able bodied. But 84 is still 84-- I'm SO VERY GLAD that Eileen is there with her. I not, then we would have talked mom into staying with one of us-- I would hate for us to lose power and not know that mom is safe, or to worry about her home alone in the dark. This way, she's in her own home-- at least until the mandatory evacuation.

I imagine your parents are incredibly thankful for your decision.

Well, my parents are safely at my Aunt & Uncles house. I texted my mom to see how things were going. She said due to high tide, National Guard is down at the end of the block where water is starting to go into the park because the marina is flooding.

I keep seeing and hearing updates on the news out here and it's terrifying! Please be safe, everyone. My mom keeps saying she is afraid of bad damage or loosing the house. I keep telling her that everything in the house, around the house and the house itself is replaceable and to stay on safe ground until the all clear... whenever that may be.

Chrissteeena, last year with Irene we almost lost our house due to the damages. We could not live there for a month. FEMA was wonderful in helping us, got us the money we needed and we fixed what was damaged. I hope your parents' house is safe but if there are any damages bad enough to prevent them from living there after the storm then tell them to contact FEMA right away.

I know not as bad as all of you East Coasters... they are saying because of the winds from Sandy Lake Michigan waves could be 25-30ft high!!!! That's pretty impressive that far away from the hurricane!!!

Stay safe... praying for you all!!!!

My sister-in-law just posted, "Pumpkin carving and halloween decorating with the kid and our evacuees are on tap for today." They're in NYC and have plenty of provisions, so it's a matter of staying calm for the sake of the 5-year-old and the baby.

Oh, my. Just read that Bay Village, NJ is underwater, with the ocean meeting the bay. I know it's a barrier island, but that's upsetting.

Bay Village is a shopping area in Beach Haven on LBI. That island had ordered evacuation as of yesterday. Sad. We were just on LBI at a wedding a month ago.

A while ago the Suffolk County executive had a news conference.

He said that, as we all knew, Fire Island was under mandatory evacuation orders yesterday. By 2 pm, everyone was to be off the island, and they shut off power to FI last night.

This morning, when it started to get ugly, some of the residents changed their minds. Suffolk County and the Saltair Police Departments rescued 5 more people.

So lives were endangered, (and a police vehicle lost, though the cops on it were able to get off before it swamped) because people living on a tiny little ISLAND weren't smart enough to get off when faced with a storm that is swallowing up the entire east coast!!!!!

    Sheer idiocy!!!

Oh, islanders and a storm... they drive me NUTS. Hello? Barrier island? OF COURSE it's going to be bad - that's why it was a MANDATORY EVACUATION.

    (Stepping off my :soapbox:)

Everyone up north - please keep checking in so we know you're safe.

One sees the same thing with wildfires in the west, chebrutta - though those generally flare up with much less warning, anyway.
