Which brands of hummus at the grocery store is good to you?

I think I tend to like the zesty/spicy &/or red pepper, sundried tomato, or garlic ones. I got the spicy hummus from Trader Joe's the other day & will have it for dinner when I make my veggie wrap.

I like the roasted garlic hummus from Trader Joe's. I've tried many many others, but none can compare!

I love, love, love hummus. My current favourites are both by SummerFresh--carmelized onion and lemon-dill varieties.

I can't stomach it. The texture gags me. I like all the ingredients separately, but blended . . . nope.

    I like plain hummus.

    But on a different subject...

Happy to see you here, Ima!

I like all flavors except the really, really spicy one. I can't remember what brand it was but it was just too strong. I have not tried the one with lemon so I'm not sure I'd like that. I actually had some tonight with homemade pita chips. My favorites are the roasted red pepper, spinach artichoke, and 40 spice (I think the brand I buy is mostly Tribe).

I love hummus. I just bought a chipotle one and decided to break out my comfort zone and bought an artichoke and spinach one too.

Ima, I wonder if you might blend it more with a drizzle of olive oil if needed to smooth it out, it might be better. Sorry to hear you feel bad though (push the button!).

Hugs, Ima. Chunky hummus - I mean, when chunks of bean are still recognizable - is hideous. I'm with Tasha here: it needs to be blended or food-processed to within an inch of its Mediterranean life, so it's sort of thinking about being fluffy (well, dimly aspiring to fluffiness). And a liberal hand with the oil, citrus and herbs-and-spices never hurt.

For the record, the Fresh & Easy chain's lemon-cilantro hummus is first-rate.

I love both of those ingredients so I'll have to try that one too! A sundried tomato one would be great too!

    Speedy recovery to you Ima.

I always use a food processor and first blend all the garbanzo beans without any of the liquid. I add a little later as needed, but found that I really don't need much (watery hummus is bad). add Tahini sauce, garlic, lemon juice and salt. everything little by little until you reach that perfect state. (watch the salt, too little or too much is not good)
    You gotta add Tahini sauce.

    True about the tahini, Linguist.

For those not in the know, tahini is sesame-seed paste; it comes in jars very much like old-fashioned peanut butter, and the texture can be reminiscent of peanut butter that's especially determined to remain separated. I've seen some recipes in which various nut butters were tried instead either as an experiment or because tahini simply wasn't available. The last Fresh & Easy that I shopped at regularly carried tahini, but it's cheaper from a Middle Eastern market.

Trader Joe's also carries tahini... right near the delicious hummus. My SO makes hummus on occasion but so far, nothing can compare to my beloved roasted garlic TJ's brand stuff. Sorry honey!

This sounds odd, but Wal-mart used to carry an olive hummus under their own deli food label. It was delicious. I loved it. Now I can't buy it anymore. :(

At the little farmer's market in my area, I got pita chips & 2 types of hummus:

    - black bean w/ chipotle harissa
    - garlic w/ sundried tomato

They're fantastic! That place has several varieties & I'll try them all eventually!

    ok...
toast 2 tbl seseme seeds until just barely browned. let them cool then chop them in processor with some oil until they are pulverized. Add lemon juice. (one or two lemons to taste) add one can garbanzo beans two cloves garlic, some olives, more oil if needed. process some more. did I leave anything out? Sometimes I cheat and add more garlic, sometimes less...mostly more. If I am keeping overnight I cover in oil after I put in sealable jar. oh yeah, salt to taste.

    hmmm...maybe I'll make some now!

I sometimes buy tj variety and alter mine to taste more like theirs. I like their chunky olive one and that is what mine is mimicked on. I also have found a recipe on line that does their three bean salad pretty well. (and so much cheaper than theirs)

What aisle do you guys find the hummas in? I'd like to try them, and walked up and down every stinkin' aisle at Walmart, with no luck. Finding an associate who actually knows what they're talking about, and actually wants to help, at Walmart for help is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Deli section, with refrigerated dips. I've never bought at Walmart, but that's where I find it in other stores.

Yes, I find hummus in the deli section. It's usually on a refrigerated shelf with other dips.

I bought hummus at Wal-Mart last night. It's in the refrigerated section of the deli, near all the specialty cheeses. I like the Sabre brand - it's nice a smooth. Then I buy seasoned pretzels and it's heaven!

Even though I still have almost a full container of carmelized onion hummus in the refrigerator, this thread prompted me to buy a tub of avocado hummus today. I have it every day for my recess snack with celery and bell peppers.

Beth, I'd answer you, but enough people did already!

That farmer's market vendor also has jalapeno & cliantro hummus, lemon hummus, an avocado one, & about 5 other flavors! Mmmmm! :) They taste so much fresher than the grocery store ones. They'll make me never want to buy any at the grocery store ever again.

I just made some hummus today :) I made it a little thick, and little course, not as creamy as other times, but this is good as well. Once I had hummus like this at an Arabic hookah lounge, made by the owner, so I know it's authentic.

I know you can also make hummus out of other beans, like black beans, etc, but you much need to experiment what to add, for example some might be too sweet, etc.
